A Note from the Principal
Dr. Tim Anderson

We don't have to tell you that middle school is a time filled with rapid change and excitement. We see it in our students every day. But these changes are not just the natural expression of adolescence. With the advancement of our district's Next Generation Strategic Plan , we also are seeing structural and program changes in our classrooms and hallways, with more to come in the next few years.

Most importantly has been the gradual shift to a more personalized learning approach to ensure we are meeting the unique needs of all learners. Our amazing teachers are committed to continuous improvement and professional learning to ensure educational changes are implemented in ways that not only ensure continued high quality learning experiences, but also build relationships and quality engagement with each of our students.

In addition, we are looking at the variables of time and space to explore options for improving the middle schools in Edina. In terms of space, with the move of ninth grade to Edina High School our school will house only grades 6-8 next year, allowing for a more true middle school experience. In addition, building construction is set to begin this spring at South View and in 2018 at Valley View.

With respect to time, the district is currently working with a community task force looking at options for different start and end times for Edina elementary and middle schools. Options are expected to be shared with the School Board in November, with any change slated for implementation in the fall of 2017.

We have also been studying the daily schedule for our Next Gen middle schools. For the past year we have looked at options for a new daily schedule that would better facilitate the kind of learning experiences we want for our middle schools. However, in light of all the other changes happening and the upcoming construction, we felt it best to pause on this decision until we are closer to the completion of construction. In so doing, we will be better able to align time and space changes in a way that allows for us to maximize the capacity for change of our staff and ensure that space and time serve to enhance learning, not impede it.

We look forward to continued discussions with you about daily schedules and our new middle school program design as the year progresses. In the meantime, if you have any questions, feel free to contact us.

- Tim Anderson, Ed. D., Principal
