Fun AND hard work: Students learn about manufacturing at Focus on the Future: Hamilton's Manufacturing Career Day

Two hundred middle and high school students from the Hamilton Wentworth District School Board and the Hamilton Wentworth Catholic District School Board learned first hand about exciting careers in advanced manufacturing at Focus on the Future, which took place on October 24th at Mohawk College's Stoney Creek campus.

Students had a tour of Mohawk College, engaged in interactive activities such as using a welder simulator, and playing basketball with robots, and spoke with 14 manufacturing employers and representatives from Ontario College of Trades, Skills Canada, McMaster University, and the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program.

The event was part of Manufacturing Day 2016, a day which is celebrated across North America by various organizations to share information about the many viable career options in manufacturing.

What did they learn? Here are a few comments from the middle school students:

  • Technology is more advanced than I thought
  • If you want to study and learn about manufacturing, Mohawk has many options to choose from
  • It's not just engineering, it's many other things
  • You can make a lot of money!
Thanks to the many partners, sponsors and employers who made the day possible.

Please visit the Manufacturing Day Hamilton site for more information.
Want a skilled workforce? You need skilled collaboration

Identifying and closing skills and data gaps to build a strong, highly skilled workforce was the central goal of Strengthening Ontario's Workforce for the Jobs of Tomorrow, a  report  released this week by the  Human Resources Professionals Association  (HRPA).

Educators must work more closely with businesses to stay aware of the needs of different industries; colleges and universities must work more closely together; and businesses need to provide more on-the-job training.
