Why are Scary Movies so Much Fun?
Why are Scary Movies so Much Fun_
Fear is generally thought of as a negative emotion. Google it and you will find thousands of articles, books and blog posts about how to face your fear and overcome it so you can be more successful, happy or brilliant. Yet fear serves a very useful purpose in our growth as a species. Fear is one of the key behaviors that keeps us alive and has done so since the time of our genetic ancestors. Read more...

Podcast: Bruce Tulgan, Rainmaker Thinking

When we started our little podcast last year, many folks were very generous with their time and joined me in great conversations about learning, even though at the time our audience was very, very small. Now that it is starting to grow, I'm excited to bring back our very first guest, Bruce Tulgan, founder of Rainmaker Thinking, a research and management consulting firm, and author of the new book, Bridging the Soft Skills Gap. The number one challenge with today's young talent is a problem hiding in plain sight: the ever-widening soft skills gap. Today's new, young workforce has so much to offer-new technical skills, new ideas, new perspective, new energy. Yet too many of them are held back because of their weak soft skills.

Reflecting on Learning

In previous issues, I wrote about my role as cohost of the Reflection Center at The Learning and Development Conference, TLDC. The role of reflection in learning is well-established and dates back at least to educator/philosopher John Dewey, who said "We do not learn from experience ... we learn from reflecting on experience." In keeping with our commitment to apply reflection to the learning that took place during the conference, we're keeping the conversation going with everyone who attended the conference or is interested in learning more about our "un-conference" approach. Interviewed by OZY: How your brain hijacks critical thinking and causes "lizard brain"

Interviewed by OZY_ How your brain hijacks critical thinking and causes lizard brain

I've commented on the past on how the Herd Mentality keeps us safe and influences our life choices - with sometimes negative results. During the primaries I shared information on How We Really Choose a Candidate and more recently I've been warning that the amygdala, a very ancient structure in the human brain, can hijack your cerebral cortex and make an important decision based on unconscious bias. In response to these posts, I was interviewed for an article on the brain and presidential debates. Read more...
Make a Module - Make a Difference
Learn Appeal

At the Learning and Development Conference (TLDC) I learned about Learn Appeal, an organization of learning professionals to spread learning wherever its needed. This global non-profit is dedicated to a simple proposition: Everybody has the right to learn.

They're looking for instructional designers, trainers and learning technologists to help put useful, life-changing content on the web where it can be accessible to people who aren't getting the training and education they need to lead happy and productive lives.

You can volunteer for the Make a Module campaign and join them. You'll get this cool mug as a thank you gift. Please let me know if you volunteer, so I can spread the word about your work in this newsletter.

y common knowledge that there are not enough people to fill the gaps left by the Baby Boomers as they exit the workforce. While most research and articles which address this looming crisis look to overcoming the skills gap , this paper looks beyond entry level to the leadership level.  Read more..
