for all you do for the animals throughout the year.  Without your support and dedication to the well being of these creatures, MABTR would not have been able to help the 250 plus Bostons this year, and over 3000 since November 2005.

We wish you and your families a very happy holiday season.  We look forward to continuing to build our relationship in the coming years!

MABTR Alumni - Bentley

After losing our first Boston Terrier Mazy only 6 weeks earlier from stomach cancer...I wasn't sure I was ready for a new baby.

The foster parents who had Bentley are friends, and I had seen the picture of Bentley the day they picked him up, and at the time I saw him...I knew there was just something special about him. I had seen his special Boston spot on his head...it was in the shape of a Mickey Mouse head...or so I saw...

I immediately called and asked them if he really did have a Mickey Mouse on his head, as I love Mickey Mouse and am a huge Disney nut....I just knew this little boy was supposed to be a new part of our family.

After first visit meeting Bentley and then finding out he was in need of not only one, but two knee surgeries, I was really scared for this little guy, and wondered how on earth we were going to afford not only adopting this new baby, but the surgeries as well. MABTR really stepped up and helped with the cost of his knee surgeries, and made sure Bentley was well before going to his new home.

Bentley is now almost five years old in January, and now has overcome his first year of his life of not being so well...to having a strange home and knee surgery in his first week of being with us, and then a second surgery a month later.

Bentley is very loved...and as an only fur child, I can tell you he pretty much gets anything he wants...from a king size bed at night to lay on...to music left on during the day for him to enjoy. He is now a big boy at 26 pounds...two healthy knees, and loves everything about his life.

Not only did Bentley get rescued....he rescued us right back.

I can't thank Deb and Jeff and MABTR for all they have done for us, and for choosing us to give Bentley a second chance at a better life.

A Boston Terrier is a special friend that you will always have in your heart.
Bentley is our special boy...and our special story. -Paige & Randy B

Adoptable Dog of the Month

Hi, my name is Roy. I am 8 years old and weigh 22 pounds. I need a new home because I was released from a breeder where I landed in a home that could not care for me, so rescue was called on for help. I am currently being fostered in Kansas City, KS.

I am pretty laid back, fairly quiet and not a big snuggler. I like to be near my human but contact isn't necessary.

I like to lay around especially on my back. When outside I like to play catch me if you can.

I am also an accomplished escape artist able to scale a 4' fence. Privacy fence or strict apartment life is best for me.

Ask Jennifer

Q:
What is a dog auction?  I adopted my dog from MABTR and was told she was a puppy mill breeder picked up at an auction.  How does MABTR go about getting these dogs?

A: A dog auction consist of breeders of all sizes that are looking to sell or purchase breeding dogs.  Why? is asked a lot.  There are many reasons.  To list a few:
  • The breeder is recycling his stock
  • The breeder is changing out breeds
  • The breeder is downsizing
  • The breeder needs money
  • The dog is too old to breed; however to another breeder, the dog still has a few years left
  • The dog was part of a bulk purchase and was not really of interest to begin with but was part of the package
  • The breeder is closing down
  • The dog is not producing as expected
MABTR works with middlemen/ undercover individuals who attend auctions at which time MABTR will place a max bid on each Boston head.  We are not in the market of buying dogs; however, when we are able to get a puppy mill dog out of the inhumane cycle of over breeding for just $1-$450, it is worth every penny. It is a fact that MABTR has paid as little as $1 for a Boston out of an auction and as high as $450.

If these dogs do not land in the hands of a rescue group, they end back in a wire cage placed outside and are scheduled for the next breeding cycle to fill the pet stores with puppies.

The conditions of the puppy mills of those attending an auction compared to those that just release dogs to rescue are no different. The only difference is those breeders at an auction make it clear that money matters more than life.  This is my personal opinion.

There are however breeders, that at the end of an auction, if their dogs did not sell that they will start giving them out for free or literally for pennies.

Breeder dogs do make wonderful pets with time and patience. Get advice on how to help your puppy mill survivor adjust in your home at Info on X-breeding Dogs

3,059 Bostons rescued since November 2005!

We ask that you help us educate the public about their options when looking for a new pet. We appreciate the fact that you are not purchasing your pet from a pet store that sells lives animals, since 98% of all puppies in a pet store come from terrible situations such as puppy mills. For more information on puppy mills visit our site and read all you need to know about puppy mills.

AGE is just a number

I wish applicants would make personality and behavior priority when adopting a dog but the truth is that a majority are not even interested in learning about a dog if it is out of their age range.

Remember that just because a dog is young does not guarantee he/she will live to be 14. MABTR cannot promise anyone how long a dog will live. We unfortunately have experienced the loss of a life at a very young age unexpectedly.

MABTR is not prejudiced when it comes to rescuing. A life is precious no matter
