North/South Runway Update

Recently some community members have asked about plans to use Toronto Pearson's north south runways more consistently. The Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA), operator of Toronto Pearson, has clarified:

For the past two years, the GTAA has been exploring noise mitigation ideas submitted by the community, called the Toronto Noise Mitigation Initiatives. As part of this initiative, the GTAA is looking at how it uses its runways in low-capacity periods, such as on weekends and in the nighttime. Idea 5 examines the possibility of a Summer Weekend Runway Alternation and Idea 6 is a Review of the nighttime preferential runway system.

These ideas are still under review and no decisions have been made. Any permanent changes to the Preferential Runway system or introduction of a summer weekend runway alternation program would need to go through full public consultation before being implemented.

You can find more on the Toronto Noise Mitigation Initiatives here. You can also find the materials and presentations from the public workshops held across the GTA that includes details on Toronto Pearson's growth and the consultation process around the noise mitigation ideas here.
