First Home Football Game Tonight!

Tonight is our first home game of the season and we can't wait for the Rams to storm Sam Tobias Field!  Our honorary captain for the game is Garces alumnus and Garces Hall of Honor inductee, Mr. Mike McCaffrey '64.  Mike McCaffrey was a standout athlete while at Garces Memorial.  He lettered in football, basketball, and baseball.   He was named to the Catholic Prep All-American Basketball Team and held the Garces basketball scoring record for over 40 years by scoring 46 points in one game.  He was named a Coach and Athlete Magazine Prep All-American in Football and was awarded the Jim Tyack Award his senior year.  He was named to the All-City Team in football and basketball.   When Mike McCaffrey graduated from Garces Memorial in 1964, he was the first Garces graduate to receive a four-year scholarship to play Division I football at University of California, Berkeley.  While playing football for Cal, he was named to the All-Pac 8 team and the All Coast Team.  His senior year he was the team Captain and played in the East-West Shrine Game, the Coaches All-America Game and the College All-Star Game vs. the New York Jets. In 1969, he graduated from Cal with a B.S. in Agricultural Economics.  Mike was drafted in the 4th round, 95th overall, by the Minnesota Viking with their second pick. Mike played for the Vikings and then for the Buffalo Bills.  After football, Mike became one of the pioneers in the production of roses in the Wasco area.  Mike served on several agricultural commissions and committees as well as being the Director of the Fresno County Farm Bureau in the 1970's.  Mike was chosen to the University of California, Berkeley's 100- year Team in October of 1982 and was inducted into the Bob Elias Hall of Fame in 1988.

WE ARE...THE SHAMROCKS?

When we opened in 1947 we were the Garces Shamrocks, inherited from our predecessors at St. Francis High School.  The nuns there chose to honor their Irish pastor, Reverend William MacLoughlin, over-ruling the student vote for the Green Terrors.  Garces became the Rams a year later.

Shamrocks' Cheer
Kick them in the shins.
Sock them in the jaw.
Drag them to the cemetery.
RAH! RAH! RAH!

Poetry in Motion

Mrs. Kristin (Watt) Zasoski's College Prep Juniors are currently reading Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter. As a way to find new meaning in a text they are becoming quite familiar with, they were tasked to create "found poetry." Students took a screen shot of a page from The Scarlet Letter novel, and then used Notability or another creative app to craft a poem by artfully connecting select words and phrases on the page together. Many students were surprised by the verses and new concepts they discovered and developed through their poems!

Pictured are Ariana Toretta, Dominic Petrini, Sam Sakowski, Nick Tobias, Catherine Tobias, Daniel Tobias, Mia Larroque, Carly Antongiovanni, Taite Hoover, Logan McMurtrey, Zachary Demos, PJ Hernandez, and Jack Waguespack.

Message from
Tonya Abbott
Director of Community Affairs

Dear Parents,

Recently, while looking for inspiration to compose a very important letter, I found Garces Memorial literature used not too long ago to inform potential students and families about the life of a Garces Ram.  In the brochure were "testimonials" from some of our recent alumni. I'm always impressed when hearing and reading about the impact Garces has had on our students.  In those testimonials, some highlighted their spiritual development and how it helped guide them in their post-secondary education, and how they were not afraid to share with others their journey with God, one even going on to study theology at a prestigious Catholic university.  Others wrote specifically about their academic preparedness when faced with tough and challenging course work, and how Garces Memorial was the foundation for their development as a leader later in life.

Would their stories be different if they had not had the opportunity to attend Garces Memorial? I think for many, yes.  Garces Memorial is a family.  A community made up of students, their families, and alumni who continue to return to campus to support an event, cheer on our athletic and academic teams, or attend one of our fine arts programs.  Garces Memorial is a community of volunteers and benefactors, who give of their time, talent, and resources for the benefit of our school and students. Together we all strive to ensure those who want the Garces experience will be able to call our school their alma mater.  I'm confident in the years to come, we will continue to see and hear more impressive testimonies from our graduates and their families.

The school must continue to have the support of the community for the day-to-day programs and services we offer our young people.  Some may find it hard to support something "intangible", and believe me it can be a challenging task educating our supporters about the importance of giving the "intangible" gift.  However, after reading those testimonies, there is nothing intangible about the impact this school has made on the young people we serve.

There is something truly extraordinary about Garces Memorial and each and every one of you have, will, or can play an integral role in our growth and the success of our students.  Please consider donating your time, talents and resources.  One day I hope to read your student's testimonial and praise for their Garces Memorial experience.
