32nd Ward Newsletter
Sept. 22, 2017

The Common Pantry on Damen Avenue is hosting an open house next week. It's a great opportunity to see what kind of services the organization provides for the neediest in our communities. The Common Pantry works to "transform the lives of clients by offering them the help they need to become self-sufficient."  During my last visit, the Pantry was serving dozens of families, many with children, lunch who might otherwise not have a meal. Please take the time to review their services on their website or visit with the volunteers who help manage the Pantry.

This week, I attended an event supporting Access Living.  We discussed the difficulties people with disabilities have with education, transportation, and healthcare, but also heard about the film projects members of the community are working on for the ReelAbilities Film Festival coming up this October.

Michael Grice discusses cuts to healthcare
These short films will include stories such as an injured U.S. Marine who comes home after rehab, or teenagers who are blind and how they navigate day to day.

Our City Administration's weak efforts and delays on improving rideshare for the community of people with disabilities must change. While rideshare has been a positive for many people, the experience (and data to prove it) for people with disabilities has been appalling. [For instance: Uber provided a total of 1,935,253 rides in Chicago in June 2015 alone. Yet, from September 2011-when it started operating in Chicago-to August 2015, Uber provided just 14 rides to motorized wheelchair users who require wheelchair-accessible vehicles.]

We will continue to advocate for equality and hope to see a change in service and respect for the community.
Thanks to Lagunitas for hosting the event.

I also want to provide you with this presentation on a new financing scheme we are voting on in October. This scheme would appropriate all Chicago sales tax revenue to this new "corporation" or special entity to refinance about $3 Billion in bonds.  Since there were no known downsides provided during our briefing, we're reviewing the scheme and welcome any input.

Have a nice weekend and enjoy the last days of summer!

Early Notice: 32nd Ward Flu Shot Clinic

No one likes to get sick! Get your free flu shot at our FREE shot clinic. The flu is a highly contagious disease that is easily spread among families, friends, and coworkers. It spreads through droplets from coughing, sneezing, and talking

The City of Chicago's Department of Health hosts free flu clinics at various public offices at the start of flu season to help keep residents from getting it. Our office will be sponsoring a clinic October 13th from 11 am to 3 pm. Shots are free and available to children and adults.

Aside from the flu shot, here are a few other things you can do to prevent the spreading it:
  • Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
  • While sick, limit contact with others as much as possible to keep from infecting them.
  • If you are sick with flu-like illness, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that you stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities.
  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread this way.
  • Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs like the flu.
  • And get vaccinated!
See you on October 13th between 11 am to 3 pm for your FREE flu shot at our Clybourn office.

Know How to Identify a Ride Share Vehicle!
Transportation Network Providers, also known as ride share companies such as Uber and Lyft, have been required to follow a specific number of rules and regulations in the City of Chicago. This includes identification for the cars that drivers are using. This is important for you to know because there have been reported scams where fake cars will pick up passengers, leading to robberies.

Please make sure that you're paying attention to your app and where your assigned driver is going. Ask what their name is when entering the vehicle to confirm you have the right driver. And use the identification markers below to confirm that they are indeed a regulated driver.

HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH:
Jesus F. Martinez
Art Exhibition: Paper Cuts and Crumpled Homes
Sept. 15 - Oct. 15

Reception & Talk
Saturday, September 23 - 2 to 4 p.m.

See the work of painter Jesus F. Martinez at this reception for his exhibit, Paper Cuts and Crumpled Homes.

Mr. Martinez says, "Blank paper has endless possibilities; it can be drawn on, painted on, or folded and molded into any structure imaginable.  I use paper as a metaphor for people, their relationships, identity, and their home.  The themes, as I paint the paper in my work, are about found home and self-identity.  From face value, paper has varying subtle shifts in color and form.  Using the versatility of paper, I create a bridge between abstract, minimalism, and representational."
