Moreno Valley Animal Shelter Awarded $20,000 Grant
The Moreno Valley Animal Shelter was awarded a $20,000 grant from the Petco Foundation to support construction of a new dog play yard.

Grant funds will be used for the construction of an enrichment play yard area that will benefit homeless canines cared for at the Moreno Valley Animal Shelter.

This area will provide homeless dogs with needed exercise, access to fresh air, and the ability to socialize with other dogs in supervised group activities. This will help to maintain their physical and mental well-being. Construction of the canine play yard continues the City’s efforts to increase positive outcomes for homeless pets.

The dog play yard project provides an area to:

  • Exercise pets in an outdoor, secured space

  • Allow interaction through supervised activities with shelter staff and volunteers

  • Enable shelter staff to more effectively evaluate the behavior of canines

  • More easily determine canine compatibility for adoption or transfer

  • Provide a “meet and greet” area for potential owners to interact with adoptable pets

“The Moreno Valley Animal Shelter greatly appreciates the Petco Foundation’s generous investment toward this important lifesaving project,” said Steve Fries, Moreno Valley’s Animal Services Division Manager. “We extend a special thanks to the Petco Foundation Team, and many of our local residents for their ongoing support.”

Moreno Valley's First Annual El Grito Celebration
Moreno Valley's first ever El Grito event was held at Moreno Valley College on Friday, September 15, 2017.

"El Grito de la Independencia," is a Mexican holiday created to honor the “cry of independence." On September 16, 1810 Priest and Mexican revolutionary Miguel Hidalgo made an impassioned speech known as the "cry of Dolores" to draw the support of his fellow countrymen to revolt against the Spanish army. Hidalgo rang the bell of his church which prompted the Mexican War of Independence. Every year on September 15, the President of Mexico recites the "cry of independence" and rings a large bell to begin Mexico's Independence Day celebrations.

Moreno Valley's El Grito event celebrated diversity as community members from all backgrounds united to enjoy this free cultural and family festival honoring the 207th Anniversary of the Commencement of Mexico's independence. The El Grito activities from Mexico City were also broadcast live during this event.

Master of Ceremonies Humberto Luna hosted this event, which featured s pecial guests Mariachi Alma de Mexico, famous character Erazno, singer Helen Ochoa, World Boxing Champion Mikey García, and former soccer players Isaac Terrazas and Ramón Ramírez from Mexican soccer teams.

El Grito was presented by the Moreno Valley Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Moreno Valley College, Consulate of Mexico in San Bernardino, City of Moreno Valley, Moreno Valley Unified School District, Altura Credit Union, Riverside County Board of Supervisors, Inland Empire Hispanic Leadership Council, Unidos Por La Musica, Highland Fairview and JR Sports.
Homeless to Work Program
Moreno Valley recently launched a new Homeless to Work pilot program to provide new opportunities to those most in need.

The Homeless to Work program will help prepare participants to transition to the active workforce by providing temporary employment while connecting these individuals with social service resources to help overcome obstacles to their pursuit of gainful employment and permanent housing. The City will partner with a community non-profit agency in this effort to help reduce homelessness in Moreno Valley.

Similar programs have been successful in other cities such as Albuquerque, New Mexico and Denver, Colorado. Moreno Valley plans to mirror their successes and learn from their challenges to create a strong
program that benefits our community.
