Honoring Veterans November 13
The DIA is offering free museum admission and a variety of special programs to veterans, active service members and their families on Sunday, Nov. 13 in recognition of the Nov. 11 Veterans Day holiday. Attendees should come in through the museum's John R St. group entrance and sign in at the registration table to take advantage of the day's offerings. The first 300 participants will receive a 10 percent discount in the museum shop and a free coffee or soft drink with purchase in Café DIA. Offerings include:
  • Art-making workshops: travel journals and personal flags, noon-4 p.m. (all ages)
  • Film: "Where Soldiers Come From," 1 p.m. (ages 13 and older)
  • Tours: patriotic artwork in the American galleries, 1 and 3 p.m. (all ages) 
  • Community Group Exhibition featuring works created by local veterans (all ages

Traveling tea sets, now through March 22, 2017
In anticipation of the opening of Bitter|Sweet: Coffee, Tea & Chocolate on November 20, the DIA is sending three designer coffee and tea service sets from its collection to locations in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties. Macomb County residents can see architect Stanley Tigerman's custom set for Italian housewares manufacturer Alessi up close and personal at the Macomb Center for the Performing Arts, located at 44575 Garfield Rd., Clinton Township, now through March 22, 2017.

New on view: Detroit After Dark: Photographs from the DIA Collection
Detroit After Dark: Photographs from the DIA Collection is now open. The exhibition, on view through April 23, 2017, features photographs of the city's glittering skylines, quiet streets, raucous nightclubs and corner bars by well-known photographers from Detroit and beyond. Admission is free for residents of Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties. 

Senior Thursdays, every Thursday at 1 p.m. 
This DIA program offers tri-county seniors the opportunity to visit the museum and enjoy programs planned exclusively for them, at no cost, every Thursday. The first Thursday of each month features a guided gallery tour; the second a lecture; the third an art-making class; and the fourth a film. During months with five Thursdays, the fifth Thursday will feature a guided gallery tour. All programs will begin at 1 p.m. The November schedule is:
  • November 3: Tour: Highlights of the permanent collection
  • November 10: Lecture: Coffee, Tea and Chocolate: New Designs for New Drinks
  • November 17: Art-making: Print-making notecards
  • November 24: No program, museum closed in observance of Thanksgiving holiday

The DIA was pleased to welcome fifth-grade students from Duncan Elementary and Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel last month. The museum has partnered with Utica Schools teachers to design field trips that help students connect their study of Native American cultures with objects in the DIA's collection.
