SCR Artistic Director Will Leave After This, His 7th Season
|
The Board of Trustees of South Coast Repertory and Artistic Director Marc Masterson have reached a mutual agreement that, after seven years of service, his contract will end at the conclusion of the 2017-18 season. Under Masterson's leadership, SCR has increased its production of world premieres by more than 40% and launched two major community-based initiatives-Dialogue/Diálogos, a bilingual site-specific community-based project in Santa Ana, Calif., and CrossRoads, a new play-commissioning program to generate work that reflects the diversity of Orange County. Masterson will continue as artistic director through the end of the 2017-18 season, directing Shakespeare in Love in January and leading programming for the 2018-19 season. Sawdust Festival General Manager Has Retired after 9 Years
|
Tom Klingenmeier, who has been associated with the Sawdust Festival for 37 years, including 9 years as its General Manager, has retired. Natalie Haug, its Operations Manager, has been promoted to succeed him. Read more in the LA Times article here.

"Hamilton"'s Lin-Manuel Miranda Takes Congress by Storm
|
When "Hamilton" creator Lin-Manuel Miranda and his dad, Luis Miranda, heard that the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities were at risk of being eliminated this year, they contacted Americans for the Arts and the National Humanities Alliance to ask how they can help. They committed two full days to walk the halls of Congress and made contact with more than 30 Members of the House and Senate on September 12-13. Read more about their visit here.

The famed Alley Theatre (above) and other Houston performing arts organizations--as well as individual artists' studios--suffered major damage when Hurricane Harvey arrived last month. Ditto for Key West, Florida's robust arts community during Hurricane Irma. And the impact of last week's Mexico City earthquake upon its arts community is just now being assessed.
Two organizations are offering grants to assist individual artists and performing arts organizations to address disaster preparedness.
ARTISTS: CERF+, the Craft Emergency Relief Fund, is granting artists up to $500 to prepare for emergencies. Application deadline is November 30.

| FREE CONFERENCE ON COPYRIGHTS FOR ARTISTS - OCTOBER 27 |
Copyright law protects artistic works, and is intended to provide a legal regime that fosters expressive authorship. This
conference, open to the public free of charge, will explore how theories of literary and expressive works may be applied to the interpretation and application of copyright law, so as to better promote the progress of the expressive arts.

The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts has awarded Cal State Fullerton's Grand Central Art Center a $100,000 grant over two years to support its artist-in-residence program - the second foundation grant awarded to the center. Read more here.
