COMING UP:
"The Zookeeper's Wife" Screening
Monday, September 25 at 6:45 pm
Please join Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust and the Consulate General of Poland for a special private screening of "The Zookeeper's Wife" on Monday, September 25, at 6:45 pm at the Laemmle Music Hall in Beverly Hills. (Note: the film will begin promptly at 7:00 pm.)
The film is based on the true story of two Poles who worked with the Resistance to save Jews from the Warsaw Ghetto. The screening will be followed by Q&A with the film's producers and Holocaust Survivor and Museum board member Bob Geminder, who was in Warsaw during the Warsaw Uprising of 1944.

2017-18 WITNESS THEATER PROGRAM
Join us this year for a unique workshop experience for high school students. Over the course of the school year, students in this workshop will learn about Holocaust education and remembrance through acting and theater, working with theater mentors to learn to write, direct, and act in scenes inspired by the Holocaust Survivors' personal experiences. No prior acting or theater knowledge is required, just an interest in learning from the last generation of Holocaust Survivors.
Applications are due by Friday, October 13. The program is free of charge.
Workshop participants meet approximately every other Sunday at the Museum and Temple Beth Am between October 2017 and April 2018. Please see application for specific meeting times. Students must commit to meeting dates to be considered for this workshop.

Redding Christian School
Today, we welcomed students from Redding Christian School to the Museum. After touring the galleries, they listened to Mary Bauer share her experiences of survival during the Holocaust. Mary was born in Budapest, Hungary in 1927 and survived Auschwitz and Ravensbruck. Mary told the students that she was happy to begin her new year by teaching students about the Holocaust, and that on Rosh HaShanah, she always reflects on her family members who perished.

HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR SPEAKER

Betty Hyatt was born in 1934 in Antwerp, Belgium to Dutch parents. In May 1940, Nazi Germany invaded Belgium. Betty's parents fled with their family and intended to go to Surinam, then a Dutch colony, by way of Portugal. As they trekked out of Belgium, Betty's family was caught in Vichy France. Since they were not French citizens, they were not allowed to travel any further. They settled in a small town and soon received aid from the French resistance. Betty lived in France for the rest of the war under a false identity. After liberation, she learned that her father had perished in Auschwitz. Betty, her mother and brother immigrated to the United States in 1946. She settled in Los Angeles where she married, had two sons, and established a career as a social worker.
This talk will be preceded by a docent-led tour at 2:00 pm.
