Dear Parents / Guardians, Students, Staff, and Friends of the Sanborn Regional High School Community. Here are your latest important announcements from Sanborn Regional High School:

Homecoming Week is Here
Show Your Sanborn PRIDE All Week!

Grades 9-11 To Take PSAT Test
Test Will Be Administered on October 11, 2017 During the School Day

On October 11, students in grades 9-10-11 will be assessed on their progress in Math and Language Arts using two tools from the College Board.  Students in 10th and 11th grade will take the PSAT exam as they have in years past.  What is new this year is that we will assess our 9th graders using the "PSAT 8/9".  The PSAT 8/9 is one in a series of exams created and administered by the College Board that leads to the classic SAT exam, which the State of New Hampshire requires of all 11th graders in the spring of their Junior year.  The PSAT 8/9 is tailored specifically to students in those grades.

By administering these assessments, we hope to accomplish several goals.  First, for those students who have college in mind after graduation, these serve as good practice tools prior to taking the SAT during Junior and possibly Senior year.  Second, all students provide an opportunity for them to demonstrate their ability on an assessment that has a common look and feel over a three year period.  Finally, the tests provide the educators here at SRHS an opportunity to judge our students' progress year-to-year.  While the exams are not exactly the same, the similar scoring system and the data we receive allow us to use them as a way to adjust the learning path taken by our students-if needed-as they move from 9th to 11th grade.  In particular, both PSAT and SAT exams are tied to several remedial tools that students can use to improve their skills, most significantly the free lessons provided by Khan Academy (khanacademy.org), which are directly tied to the PSAT / SAT assessments.
In addition, the leadership team here at Sanborn can use the data we receive back from the College Board to analyze the progress of larger groups of students. The assessments will give us some valuable data regarding how this year's 10th graders compare to next year's class, or how the Class of 2021 do on the PSAT 8/9 this year vs. the PSAT next year.  We can also examine small sub-groups such as our students with learning disabilities, girls in writing, boys in math, and so on; the possibilities are endless.  Based on that analysis, we can-and will-come to conclusions that will allow us to adjust curricula, teaching methods, course options, even how we assess our students in their classes on a daily basis.

The exams themselves take about three hours to complete, and come at no cost to you as a parent / guardian.  You will receive a detailed score report after the exams.  We hope to have those for all students about two months after the exams are completed.  If you have questions, please don't hesitate to contact any of us for assistance.
Change Direction and Judge Broderick Come to Sanborn
A Message From Student Assistance Counselor Amanda Fuller

Thanks to a great collaboration between Sanborn High School and community organizations like SoRock and the Center for Life Management, on Thursday September 14th students were able to hear a powerful story about mental illness and hope from former New Hampshire Chief Justice John Broderick. Judge Broderick spent the day at Sanborn talking to students, teachers and community members about the importance of recognizing mental health symptoms and empowering individuals to help themselves and peers.
Judge Broderick met with students in two assemblies to share his personal story of how his family came to recognize that his son had a mental illness and the significant impact it had on his family. Judge Broderick acknowledged that for most of his life he did not understand mental illness and did not have the tools to recognize the signs that someone he cared about was having a difficult time until it had already escalated.
Now that Judge Broderick's son is getting the help and support that he needs, Judge Broderick has teamed up with various state agencies, including the Department of Education and Dartmouth-Hitchcock Hospital, to spread awareness and education to all sectors of the community.
In addition to sharing his story, Judge Broderick acknowledged that there is a real opportunity for change and understanding, starting with youth. After sharing his story, Judge Broderick reviewed his campaigns "5 Signs of Emotional Suffering" with the students as well as the latest part of the campaign, "R.E.A.C.T", which was developed to give the students and community members some tools and empower them to help someone they may be concerned about.
There has been a lot of great feedback from students and teachers after hearing Judge Broderick speak and we encourage parents to ask their students about it and continue the conversation. Judge Broderick has agreed to come back to the Sanborn Community to speak with any community members and parents that may be interested in hearing his story and joining the conversation so keep your ears open for  a time in the near future!

Senior Class Needs Job Sites for Senior Day of Caring
The Event Will Run the Morning of October 11, 2017

On Wednesday, October 11, 2017, the senior class of Sanborn Regional High School will participate in Senior Day of Caring, a day where seniors are matched with local individuals, groups, and organizations to provide community service. Are you willing to sponsor a small group of students that day? Students are available for four hour shifts in the morning, from 8:20AM-12:30PM. Jobs can include light yard work, cleaning, office work, and other similar tasks. Please contact teachers Sarah Brown ( [email protected] ) or Ashley Harbel ( [email protected] ) by email or call the school at (603) 642-3341 before September 30, 2017 to reserve a space at this year's event.

Senior Day of Caring is an annual tradition that has provided support to hundreds of local individuals and groups over the years in Newton, Fremont, and Kingston. It serves as a service requirement for all seniors at the high school, reinforcing the notion that all Sanborn students find their path, give back, and make good choices throughout their life.

Do You Have Unwanted Clothing?
Please Use Our Planet Aid Donation Boxes, Located in the Staff Parking Lot

When you drop your unwanted clothing off in these bins, the SRHS PTO gets paid based on the weight of the clothing! This is a really easy way to help our school. All PTO proceeds go directly back to programming and scholarships that directly benefit our students.

Did you know? From April of 2015 - May 2017, this fundraiser has helped us raise nearly $2400.00 for the PTO. Help us double that number by sharing this opportunity with your friends, your family, and your neighbors!
