LAAC In Action
Community Legal Services in East Palo Alto (CLSEPA)

Enrique fled his home country, El Salvador, at the age of 16 after being shot at and threatened by gangs. Enrique was caught by U.S. Border Patrol and detained for almost a month before being released to live with his aunt in East Palo Alto. He was recently granted asylum and is now building a new life there, no longer fearful of being killed. Many children, like Enrique, have traveled thousands of miles on their own, fleeing violence and persecution and seeking a safe haven in America.

Community Legal Services in East Palo Alto serves as the clearinghouse for hundreds of immigrants in our region, including more than 100 unaccompanied children like Enrique, whose deportation cases have been fast-tracked by the federal government.  Every Wednesday, our immigration attorneys, along with volunteers, appear at the San Francisco Immigration Court, offering legal consultations to children and families and appearing as "friends of the court."   Read more about CLSEPA's work!
Gloria Ho, Fernando Gaytan, and Rita Smith accepting their Awards of Merit
Congratulations, 2016 Awards of Merit Recipients!

This year LAAC honored three Awards of Merit recipients at our Traveling Training conference in Riverside.

Fernando Gaytan, managing attorney at the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles received the attorney award. The support staff award went to Gloria Ho, Citizenship Network Manager at Asian Americans Advancing Justice - LA. Rita H. Smith, pro bono volunteer at Inland Empire Latino Lawyers' Association, Inc., received the volunteer award.

Although she was unable to make it to our awards ceremony, LAAC joins the California Commission on Access to Justice in recognizing Lollie Roberts, supervising family law facilitator at the Sacramento Superior Court, as the Joint Award of Merit recipient.
