All Saints' Walk and Taizé Worship Service

Pausing for a Time of Remembrance, Prayer, and Singing
|
Tonight as we look ahead to November and All Saints' Day, a hosted All Saints' Labyrinth Walk will be held from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. in Anderson Hall. Participants will have opportunity to honor and remember those whose death has saddened them this year as well as the communion of saints from all ages.
As it is a fourth Friday at Fourth Church, the walk will be followed by a worship service in the style of
Taiz
é at 7:30 p.m. in Buchanan Chapel. The Taizé service provides an opportunity to gather in a contemplative, prayerful setting at the end of a busy week. Candles; easy-to-learn songs from various countries, traditions, and languages; and a period of silence all contribute to a time to reflect and to open oneself to God.

A Time to Remember Our Heritage
|
This Sunday is Reformation Sunday, a day when we recall the rich heritage of the Protestant tradition. The Presbyterian Church (USA) grew out of the Reformation of the sixteenth century under leaders such as John Calvin and John Knox. It was on October 31, 1517, that Martin Luther posted his ninety-five theses on the church door in Wittenberg, Germany, the watershed event sparking the Reformation.
Reformation Day is also a day when we remember and give thanks for Reformation leaders and all others who have kept the faith.
As we do each Reformation Sunday, we will remember the Scottish heritage of the Presbyterian church when bagpiper George Sims plays the recessional.

Just Over a Week until Commitment Sunday!

Next Sunday, November 6 is Commitment Sunday, a day when we will celebrate all that we are able to do together through our generous response to God's blessings in our lives.
As we look ahead to this year's celebration, we encourage everyone to complete a giving response card for the 2017 Annual Appeal for Fourth Church and Chicago Lights prior to worship that day. To date we have received 25 percent of our goal of 1,200 total pledges for the church, so we're making good progress, but we need everyone's help to meet our goals for 2017 by November 6!

On Sunday, November 6 we will place our pledge cards in the offering plate and dedicate them to the work of God's kingdom. If you have already submitted your pledge or made it online, we will have cards available for you to put in the offering plate.
To those who have already given--thank you! We are deeply grateful for your generosity, which will allow the work and ministry of Fourth Church and Chicago Lights to continue in 2017.
Please "Let Your Light Shine!" and support the 2017 Annual Appeal, as we continue to be faithful followers of Christ and active citizens of the world in which we live.

Register Online by This Sunday

This Sunday is the last day to register for this summer's mission trip to Guatemala!
Join Tom Schemper, Director of the Replogle Center for Counseling and Well-Being, and spiritual
director and pastoral counselor Sue Schemper in traveling to Guatemala
July 2-9, 2017,
to work on projects through Common Hope. Common Hope, which serves Guatemalans through programs in education, health care, and housing, will provide staff for language translation along with the trip leaders.
Participants will visit families in a local community and help construct a simple home or sort supplies in a warehouse, all while learning about the culture, history, economics, challenges, and gifts of Guatemalan people.

A Book Study with Mark Eldred
|
Next week the Academy for Faith and Life will begin a three-week book study, led by Interim Director for Adult Education Mark Eldred, on the book Race in a Post-Obama America: The Church Responds. This will likely be the last class Mark will lead for us (see the next story), so you won't want to miss this one.
The book, edited by Presbyterian minister David Maxwell, notes basic definitions of and history around racism in the United States, current thoughts on institutional racism, and specific actions being taken by individuals and churches, and in doing so offers concerned Christians the chance to clarify terms and issues around racism and discern how to respond.
Copies of Race in a Post-Obama America will be available for purchase during Coffee Hour on Sunday morning.

| Mark Eldred and Old Stone Church |
This Sunday Mark Eldred will be at the Old Stone Church of Cleveland as that congregation votes to call him to serve in ministry with them as an Associate Pastor. Mark sang with our Morning Choir for eleven years and has most recently served here as Worship Coordinator and Interim Director of Adult Education. We are deeply grateful for the many gifts he has shared with us over the years.
Please join us in holding Mark, Gillian, and the Old Stone Church congregation in prayer!

Drop off Pumpkins at the Urban Farm
|
Want a place to put those Halloween pumpkins after the holiday without throwing them away? Drop them off at the Chicago Lights Urban Farm, and we'll compost them! This helps cut down on landfill waste, and since most pumpkins are grown in Illinois, it keeps soil nutrients local.

| A Service of Remembrance and Requiem |
Next Sunday is All Saints' Sunday, a day when we remember the faithful who have gone before us and honor departed loved ones.
A special communion service of remembrance will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the Sanctuary that day. Maurice Duruflé's Requiem will be sung by the Morning Choir during the service.

| Senior Associate Pastor Update |
The Senior Associate Pastor Nominating Committee (SAPNC) you elected in August has successfully completed and received approval of the required PCUSA Ministry Information Form (MIF). That form has now been submitted to the Presbyterian Church (USA) for posting so that it might help identify candidates for our new position of Senior Associate Pastor
for Leadership Development and Adult Education. As you will recall, that position will be responsible for (1) associate pastor supervision, (2) leadership development for staff and lay leaders, and (3) adult education.
Submitting the MIF is an important step in the search process, since the form articulates key information for candidates to aid in their discernment process, going beyond the job description to describe how this new role will help Fourth Church achieve its vision.
Developing the content has been integral to the SAPNC's discernment, as they work to deepen their thinking about the role and the characteristics we as a congregation seek. With this step complete, the next one will be for the committee to research and accept prospective candidates.
Please keep in prayer those serving on the committee: John Borovicka, Lesley Conzelman, Cary Donham, Arlene Faulk, Elizabeth Foster, Cornell Wilson, and Allison Youngblood (chair). These individuals will now begin the process of researching and receiving inquiries from prospective candidates.

There are several ways to get involved in the mission and ministry of Fourth Church. See below for details!
Current Volunteer Needs
Servers for a traditional dinner served at Fourth Church on Thanksgiving, November 24, 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Volunteers will greet ticketed guests, set tables, pour beverages, serve meals, and clear dishes.
Shower Ministry Greeters to check in and provide supplies to guests of the Meals Ministry program; Tuesdays, 1:15-4:00 p.m., on a rotating schedule.
In2It Café instructors to teach thirty-minute enrichment classes--from yoga to chess to dance to creative writing--to Chicago Lights Tutoring students on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays, the first week of October through mid-December, from 5:25 to 5:55 p.m.
Sunday School office assistant
to perform administrative tasks one Sunday each month from 9:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.
Tutors for the Chicago Lights Tutoring program, especially on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
