Parent Newsletter

September 2016

Hello Maize South community. It's November and great things are going on at MSHS. We finished up the first nine weeks in a positive manner, and we are off to a fantastic start to the second nine weeks.

Our girls' cross-country team won the Class 4A State Championship this past Saturday in Wamego. The girls also won League and Regional championships in the past three weeks. Our boys' cross-country team also won the 4A State Championship in Wamego. It was a clean sweep for MSHS cross-country. The boys also won League and Regional championships in the past three weeks. The two State Championships are the first team State Championships in the history of MSHS. Our head coach is Jason Parr and our assistant coach is Brian Hutton. Congratulations, Maize South Cross Country!

We are expecting to begin using our new commons area later this week. Most of the construction is done and the plywood wall that has been up since the end of May is gone. Thank you to the patrons of USD 266 for supporting the bond and allowing for new construction at MSHS. Work continues on the new athletic entrance, and the completion date is scheduled for March of 2017.

Last Friday we faced Andover Central High School in district playoff action. With the victory, the Mavericks were crowned District Champions and have advanced into the Class 4A playoffs. We host Ulysses High School this Friday at MSHS. Kick-off is set for 7pm. Good luck, Mavs!

During halftime of Friday's football game, VYPE Magazine, Rusty Eck Ford, Walmart, and WATC gave a $1,000 scholarship to the Maize South Booster Club. Thank you to those great sponsors.

Congratulations to the girls tennis team for qualifying four participants for the state meet at Winfield. Alayna Macias, Emma Queen, Elizabeth Cole, and Courtney Sellens.

Congratulations to the girls golf team for qualifying for the state meet in Hesston. Team members were Audrey Watson, Hannah Shaver, Morgan Wilson, London Love, Sarah Hyatt, and Lauren Stevens.  MSHS senior Audrey Watson finished in 18th place, Congratulations, Audrey.

Congratulations also to MSHS students Alayna Macias and Blake Bontrager for being elected as Business Professionals of America officers. Alayna was elected as the State President and Blake was elected as the State Treasurer.

This season has been a remarkable year of accomplishment for the marching band: first place at Lees Summit, second place in 4A, 7th in the state at KBA, and first at KU. Congratulations on a great showing and a fantastic season. The band is under the direction of Mr. Grant Whitcomb.

Food Pantry Information
The Maverick Mentors, a school leadership group, in coordination with several staff members and community groups, have established a food pantry that is now OFFICIALLY open for business.  The pantry, located in the high school, will provide a limited selection of food and hygiene products to any Maize South High School student in need.  The pantry is supplied through and contingent upon student and community donations.  Non-perishable food items as well as new personal hygiene items are always accepted.  For a student to utilize the pantry, they need to talk with a counselor or an administrator; there is no vetting.  The whole process is discreet, with the goal of providing essentials without calling attention to the student.

Please feel free to share this information out so that all families in the building are aware of the opportunity.

Math Club/ Math Highlights

Math Club members ponder a particularly difficult problem. These students regularly compete in problem solving contests online and at college campuses around the state.

Mr. Shelly's Geometry class made quadrilaterals using spaghetti and marshmallows. Using properties of parallel lines and congruent sides, this student was able to guarantee that this figure is a parallelogram.

Ms. Stwalley's students are regularly making use of materials made available through a generous grant from the Maize Education Foundation. This activity promoted student discourse through constructing viable arguments and critiquing the reasoning of others.
