October 2016

I have always found it interesting that October is both Domestic Violence Awareness Month and Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Both issues are very important, and when either touches a woman, the effects are devastating for her, her family, and her friends. We have been able to make great strides on both these fronts in recent years, but domestic violence still occurs far too often. Over 3.7 million women are victims of domestic violence every year--that's 15 times the number of women who will be diagnosed with breast cancer annually.

Like breast cancer, domestic violence is not exclusive to women. Although 1 in 4 women will experience domestic violence, 1 in 7 men will also become victims. Rates of victimization are even higher in the LGBTQ community. No one should ever be subjected to domestic violence. You can make a difference:
  • Store our Crisis Line number, 800-575-5352, on your phone.
  • Offer non-judgmental support to loved ones who disclose domestic violence and help them to connect with Stand Up Placer.
  • Take part in Domestic Violence Awareness Month activities.
  • Consider making a donation to Stand Up Placer to help us provide critical services for survivors and their children.
You probably know one or more friends, family members, or co-workers who are survivors, even if you're not aware of it yet. What will you do when a friend or loved one confides their personal struggle with domestic violence? I'm asking you to take a stand today.

Sincerely,

Jenny Davidson
Executive Director

2016 Stand Up and Run
Our 6th annual run on October 1 was the kickoff event for Domestic Violence Awareness Month at Stand Up Placer. Runners, walkers, volunteers and staff enjoyed a crisp fall morning at the Roseville Sculpture Park. Runners supported survivors while taking in the scenic Miner's Ravine Trail. Partners

We have recently received donations from the following partners:

Thank you to the Mary Kay Foundation for our $20,000 grant. These unrestricted funds will help us to continue to maintain critical services and programs for domestic violence survivors in Placer County.

Thank you to the Auburn Lyon Real Estate office for your $5,000 donation. The office contributed from their earnings and voted to make Stand Up Placer their charity of choice this year.

The holidays can be a very bittersweet time for survivors at Stand Up Placer, but you can help to make them brighter. Survivors' families are often in turmoil at the time of year when they want to maintain a sense of stability in their children's lives. Many survivors do not have the means to celebrate the holidays with their children. They may be too far away from extended family to visit, or it may be unsafe for them to visit extended family.

Donations of food, family dinners, and gift cards for grocery stores are most welcome at Thanksgiving.

Survivors celebrate winter holidays from many faith traditions at Stand Up Placer. You can help to make the holidays special with your gifts:
  • Sponsor a family (gifts for the family members, gift cards, or a pre-ordered holiday dinner)
  • Donate an individual gift for a child or survivor
  • Give the gift of healing--host a holiday party and collect donations to support services to help survivors reclaim their lives.

Success Stories  SS

We received this anonymous note from a survivor. This person speaks to the heart of what we do and what we hope to accomplish during Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

"Today...

Today I am stronger than yesterday...

Smarter than last week...

More confident than last month...

And more prepared than last year...

For Today I Am A Survivor!

And tomorrow I'll be stronger...

I'll be smarter next week...

I'll be more confident next month...

And I'll be even more prepared next year!"

Volunteers of the Month
This month, we would like to recognize all the volunteers whose contributions to the 6th Annual Stand Up and Run were key to the success of the event. Stand Up Placer would not be able to do events without their help.

We would like to give a special shout-out to three run volunteers who went above and beyond the call. All three attended all the run committee meetings and stepped up to help with the event management.

Dianna Duran
Dianna volunteered to manage the run registration and check-in for the event day. She prepared the site materials and shirts, wrote a registration script, trained the event volunteers, and made sure registration ran smoothly on the morning of the run.

Keara Donahue and Charles Schutt
Keara and Charles offered super support for site logistics. They helped with sign needs, event set-up and break-down and transport of the many items needed on-site.

Whether you have a lot of time to give or just a little, we need your help and support.  We simply can't do it without you.
