NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS

THEY'D RATHER HAVE A STARBUCKS
September 18, 2017, The New Haven Independent, By Markeshia Ricks- "A developer is eyeing a Whalley Avenue property formerly home to a CVS pharmacy in Westville as the possible new home for convenience retailer Family Dollar.  The developer should not expect a welcome mat.
Alder Richard Furlow, during the first Westville/West Hills community management team of the year, delivered the news of the developer's interest in putting in a Family Dollar - and threw out the idea of mocha lattes to go as an alternative.  The former home to CVS has been vacant since CVS moved a block away into a brand new building at the intersection of Whalley Avenue and Dayton Street. Family Dollar, represented by the Windsor-based Northeast Retail, is the first strong nibble at bringing some life back to the abandoned property..." Click HERE to comment and read full article.

A HISTORY RECLAIMED, ONE QUEEN AT A TIME
September 15, 2017, The Arts Paper, by Lucy Gellman- "Just to the right of a stripper pole, Madison Sapphire Duchannes is killing it. In one hand, she grips the microphone tightly, lifting it to her mouth as she flutters her blue-powdered eyes and long, mascaraed lashes. The mic casts its bulbous shadow on her outfit - red bra, red and black bustier, red panties, everything hugging minuscule, angular curves. She drags her right hand through her hair, pulling off a long blonde wig. Sweat rolls down her scalp, blush-kissed cheekbones, forehead. The picture is part of #NHVDrag, a new, limited-run book of photography and poetry by artist Daniel Eugene and his imprint Studio Feruvius. Chronicling the drag scene at Partners Cafe on York Street, the book premieres this Saturday at New Haven's annual PRIDE Block Party on Orange Street..." LE PETIT STUDIO: TOTO KISAKU'S THEATER WORKSHOP FOR CHILDREN

"Le Petit Studio" is a workshop space for dramatic readings by and for children (ages 8-12), with some participation by brave adults!

Creativity is exciting. It's exhilarating. And creating with other people brings them into our lives in a way that is empowering - the opposite of violence, which keeps others on the outside. Creating safe spaces for young people to be creators of their own lives and experiences is vital to developing the neighborhoods, the communities, the cities we dream of.
How: Imagine in 2 hours that 20 young people can recreate an entire world on stage. Imagine that they take responsibility for making artistic decisions to realize their vision and make their story come alive. First, the children choose a book or story to dramatize. The book is chosen at random from a pile of possibilities. Participants are invited to bring a favorite book to add. Next, the children decide who will play each character, who will make sounds that will create the environment, and who will design the costumes and the set. Then the activity begins! For 1 marvelous hour, the young people cut, sew, paint, staple, and draw; they sing, whistle, blow, snap, stomp, and make unearthly sounds to recreate the world they're creating; they practice voices for characters, look up how to pronounce unfamiliar words, try out various postures that fit their characters, and dig deeply into their characters-how they feel about themselves, how they feel about the other characters. The workshop concludes with a performance from beginning to end.

This program is free of charge, made possible with support from The ArtEcon Initiative. All supplies and materials are included. We strongly encourage you to RSVP as space is limited.
