4-H Enrollment/Re-enrollment for 2016-17

were emailed to administrative 4-H club leaders on September 1, 2016 or will be mailed upon request. Administrative leaders are asked to turn in the following forms to Macomb County MSU Extension, Attn: 4-H, 21885 Dunham Road, Suite 12, Clinton Township, MI 48036 to re-enroll their clubs:

Printed volunteer and member enrollment forms are available from MSU Extension for those who are unable to enroll or re-enroll online.

If you're a member of the Macomb County 4-H Council or a Macomb County 4-H program committee, don't forget to add it to your enrollment record!
A club member's enrollment will not be approved by MSU Extension until the club is enrolled and his or her participation fee payment and required online or printed authorization form signatures have been received by the county Extension office. Volunteers should not enroll online until they have completed the 4-H volunteer selection process (VSP).
Deadlines
: Please be aware that the November 1st re-enrollment deadline date is being reviewed and may change.

4-H Re-enrollment Deadline is December 1st
At the October 4-H Leader Update, a discussion took place concerning the current 4-H member enrollment deadlines for members who want to show their 4-H projects at the Armada Fair. The Macomb County deadlines historically have been November 1st for returning 4-H members and April 1st for new 4-H members. Upon further review, the Extension staff feels no changes are necessary to the current deadlines.
Because of the confusion this may have caused,
a grace period of one month has been granted for the 2017 enrollment period, extending the deadline immediately to December 1st for returning 4-H members
. The 4-H member enrollment deadline for new members planning to show projects at the Armada Fair will remain April 1, 2107. Any questions or comments can be directed to the Extension office.
Rocketry Project Members: Make sure your 4-H Online records are updated
REMINDER: 4-H members working with the Rocketry project through Macomb Clown Arounds 4-H Club should add Macomb Clown Arounds as a shared club to their 4-H Online record and Aerospace as a shared project with Macomb Clown Arounds.

Ben Wilk Supports Macomb County 4-H Shooting Sports Program
The Inaugural Ben Wilk Sporting Clays Shoot was held in September for 4-H at the Detroit Sportsmen's Congress. Shooting sports participants of all skill levels participated. Look for another event in the spring!
Special thanks to Ben Wilk for the donation to Macomb County 4-H Outdoor Education and Recreation Program! A check was presented at the Macomb County 4-H Leader Update on October 18th!
Hot off the Press: Member Personal Record Books!
For the past year, a small group of Michigan State University Extension staff, members of the life skills team have been working on updating the personal record book. The book is now more modern and user friendly for youth, volunteers, and event coordinators.
New to the record book:
-Fillable PDF
-Lots of different parts so youth can pick pages that relate to them
-Instruction that can be use by leaders/parents on filling out the portfolio
-Color instead of Black and White
This resource will be available through the MSU Extension Bookstore.
Mark your calendars for 4-H Horse Winter Projects at Goodells County Park!
The days are getting shorter, and the weather is turning cooler, but that doesn't mean the horse project has to end. 4-H members in Macomb and St. Clair counties, please join us to learn about your favorite things in the world (horses of course) and make some new friends. "Winter Projects" encompasses several horse-related experiences, described below, and
will meet the first Monday of every month, October through April, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Community Building at the Goodells County Park (horse judging may run until 8:30).
Regardless of your background or experience, if you want to learn, we want you to join us!
Intro group (non-competition)
This group meets to learn the basics, and has an absolutely fantastic time doing so. Some of last year's topics included a blacksmith demonstration, equine first aid, making horse treats, the history of show clothes, nutrition/poisonous plants, tack, and grooming. Hippology and Horse Bowl
These competitive groups will be coached by Heather Mudge and will meet on the Mondays above. Details and expectations will be discussed at the October meeting. Contact Heather at (810) 434-4359 or

Hippology is literally the study of all things horse. Contestants will judge halter classes, take a written exam, evaluate horse related slides and stations, and participate in solving a team problem at MSU in April.
Horse Bowl is exactly what it sounds like--quiz bowl with horse questions. Check out what it's like to test your knowledge and reflexes at the same time! Contest to take place at MSU in April.
Horse Judging
This group is open to both those wanting to compete and those who just want to learn what the judge is looking for, and will be coached by Lucy Brown. Contact Lucy at (586) 855-3215 or

with any questions, or to be placed on the contact list if you can't make the October meeting. Additional "classroom style" meetings and live judging clinics will be scheduled throughout the winter, with a contest at MSU in April. The focus will be 50% conformation (halter) and 50% performance classes for various breeds. Contestants will judge eight classes at the April contest, answer questions on some classes (in writing), and verbally explain their placings for some classes to a judge, one on one.
This past spring, the St. Clair County Senior Regular Team of Felishia Block, Carrie Brown, Samanthia Enright, and Hailey Moses placed second in the state and will be going on to compete at the Eastern National 4-H Roundup in Louisville, KY in November. Great job girls and best of luck at Nationals!!
Communications
Give an individual speech or demonstration on a horse topic, or partner up with some friends to do so, at MSU in April. Talk to Lucy or Heather for additional details. This is a fairly new contest area, and we'd love to send some participants from Macomb and St. Clair counties!
Important things to know:

The Hippology, Horse Bowl, and Horse Judging contests take place at the same time, so you can only compete in one area.

Communications is the night before the other contests, so everyone can participate in communications.

Everyone is welcome at the additional horse judging meetings and clinics, but sometimes they are scheduled last minute, so let Lucy know if you want to be on the contact list.

Homeschoolers can receive credit for winter projects as a course, if they compete. Competition is considered the final exam.

Online Septic System Class Offered
Learn more about your septic system! There are over 1.4 million septic systems in Michigan and it's estimated at over 10% are in some level of malfunction. This can and does negatively contribute to contamination of ground and surface water. Unfortunately there are still many people who don't understand the difference between a sewer system and a septic system. Some don't even realize they are on a septic system!
A statewide webinar, "Septic Systems: Insight Into Your Onsite System", is scheduled for Monday, November 14, 2016, from 12-2 p.m. This webinar will include a statewide update and activities on wastewater, an overview on what a septic system is, how it works, how to maintain your system, best management practices, signs of trouble, advanced treatment systems and resources that are available.
Speakers are Dave Cotton, Professional Engineer with the Department of Environmental Quality, Laura Pobanz, County Health Department Septic & Well Supervisor and Dr. Ted Loudon, Profession Emeritus at MSU. There will be a live question and answer session after the presentations.

Have You Heard of the Michigan 4-H China Project?
Through this project, participants:
- Realize the many similarities between their lives and youth their age halfway around the world;
- Develop awareness, understanding and appreciation of other cultures;
- Gain a sense of being part of one world, whether they live in Michigan or in Shandong Province;
- Have a significant learning experience that includes language, social studies, natural science and the arts;
- Receive in-depth information about a country that (1) has the world's oldest (3,500-plus years) culture, one rich in the arts, science and philosophy, (2) is home to the world's fastest-growing economy, (3) has a fifth of the world's population and (4) is the world's third largest country.

Michigan 4-H China Project
is comprised of the following.
Discover the Children of China Audiovisual Program
(Ages: K
indergarten through 4th Grade)
This six-minute long audiovisual program, which contains a discussion guide, encourages children to think about the daily lives of children their own age who live in China. Visits to elementary
classrooms, playgrounds and after-school art activities are included.
The Michigan 4-H Children's Art Exchange
(Ages: K
indergarten through 6th Grade)
In this popular program, Michigan youth create "visual letters" representing their story, life and reality to be sent to Chinese youth of the same age. The "letters" use young people's creative skills and abilities while, simultaneously, reducing and often eliminating language barriers between the children. Usually in early May, a selection of Michigan artwork is sent to as a gift to the children of China.
Teaching Kits
Unique kits are available to facilitate teaching about China and making art. Each kit consists of nine or 10 original pictures by Chinese children, a study guide
and a description of the pictures in the kit. The description of the pictures in Kit A can be found here

Southwest Michigan Cat Fun Show - November 12th

Health Champions - Protecting and Improving Your On-Farm Investment
An Educational Opportunity for Michigan's Pork Producers
Michigan State University Extension, Michigan Pork Producers Association, along with United Producers, Inc. have partnered to bring an educational opportunity to Michigan Pork Producers. Health Champions, Protecting and Improving Your On-Farm Investment is a one-time educational event offered in four locations of the state. These sessions are focused on providing information to improve daily management of swine herds and creating an opportunity for producers to provide input on their activities, as well as what has or has not worked for them. Geared to accommodate all sizes of pork operations, the information presented will benefit those involved in swine industry.
Throughout these 3-hour sessions, participants will hear from industry experts on various different topics, including: proper ways to assist the farrowing sow; changes to medicated feed regulations - what to expect from the veterinary feed directive starting January 1st, 2017; vaccination plans and deworming schedules; getting them started right - proper nutrition for the newly-weaning pigs; semen management for artificial insemination; should this pig be treated - knowing when to treat or euthanize; and mortality management. This educational event is offered free of charge to all attendees, thanks to sponsorships from industry businesses.
These educational sessions will be offered across state. The location details include: October 11th, 2016 at the Van Buren ISD and Tech Center, 250 South Paw Paw Street in Lawrence, MI; October 12th, 2016 at the Isabella County MSUE Extension Office, 200 N. Main Street in Mt. Pleasant, MI; October 18th, 2016 at the Jackson County MSUE Extension Office, 1715 Lansing Ave. #257 in Jackson, MI; and October 19th, 2016 at the Community Center, 407 State Street in Hart, MI. All sessions will run from 6-9 p.m. Dinner will be available for all participants starting at 6 p.m. and the educational portion of the meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m.

2017 Michigan 4-H Rabbit & Cavy Show
The 2017 Michigan 4-H Rabbit and Cavy Show will be held on January 28, 2017 at the MSU Pavilion in East Lansing. The show catalog and pre-registration site is now available online at

. This year, MSU Extension will be using a pre-registration option for youth to enter the show and avoid waiting in line to enter the morning of the show. 2107 National 4-H Beekeeping Essay Contest
Enter the National 4-H Beekeeping Essay Contest! Beekeeping has had is five minutes of fame for the past seven years. Now more than ever, the general
public along with beekeepers are asking "What will happen if the bees are gone?" With the continued
threat of pesticides, this is a very real question. Your paper should research and help answer this
question.
Survey your community to see what is being done. Include your state in your survey to see if there are
any programs they are using for pollination or any other program that could aid the honey bee.
The scope of the research is an essential judging criterion, accounting for 40% of your score. The
number of sources consulted, the authority of the sources, and the variety of the sources are all
evaluated.
Personal interviews with beekeepers and others familiar with the subject are valued sources of
information and should be documented. Sources, which are not cited in the endnotes, should be listed
in a "Resources" or "Bibliography" list.
Note that "honey bee" is properly spelled as two words, even though many otherwise authoritative
references spell it as one word.
Rules Overview
(failure to meet any one of the requirements will result in a disqualification):
- Students interested in writing an essay, should contact their local 4-H offices for contest details. The state selection must be done through the 4-H system.
- Preparation for National Judging: Typewritten or computer- generated double-spaced, 12pt. Times or similar type style, on one side of white paper following standard manuscript format.
- Must submit an essay, 750 to 1000 words, on the essay topic
- Essays will be judged on (a) scope of research- 40%; (b) accuracy- 30%; (c) creativity- 10%; (d) conciseness- 10%; and (e) logical development of the topic- 10%
- All factual statements must be referenced with bibliographical-style endnotes.
- On a separate page, please include a brief biographical sketch of the essayist, including birthdate, gender, complete mailing address, e-mail address, and telephone number, must accompany the essay.
- Each state may submit ONE entry only.
- Deadline for National submission is: March 3, 2017.
- Final judging and selection of the National Winner will be made by the Foundation's Essay Committee, whose decision is final.
- National winners will be announced by the week of May 1st, 2017.
- All National entries become the property of the Foundation and may be published or used as it sees fit. No essays will be returned.
- Send the winning state entries with the subject title: "4-H State Winning Entry from XXX State" to : [email protected].
Eligibility:
Contest is open to active 4-H Club members only. 4-H'ers who have previously placed first, second, or third at the National level are NOT eligibility; but other state winners are eligible to re-enter. Students must write on the designated subject only. There will be NO exceptions.
Awards:
- First Prize: $750.00
- Second Prize: $500.00
- Third Prize: $250.00
The National winners' essays will appear in an issue of the American Beekeeping Federation's Newsletter.
*Each State Winner, including the National winners, receives an appropriate book about honey bees, beekeeping, or honey.

Back by popular demand, the World of 7 Billion student video contest can help you bring technology and creativity into your next 4-H project! The contest challenges students to create a short (60 seconds or less) video illustrating the connection between world population growth and one of three global challenges: climate change, ocean health, or rapid urbanization.
