CRA Announces Next Executive Director

Earlier this summer, CRA began the search for our next Executive Director upon Diane's announcement of her upcoming retirement. Our search has concluded and the CRA Board of Directors is pleased to announce the hiring of Mary McClellan as the next CRA Executive Director.

Mary has fourteen years of experience in the recycling industry encompassing work in the collegiate, local government, and private sectors. Most recently, Mary worked as a Recycling Program Coordinator for ReCommunity in partnership with the City of Greensboro. Mary has a deep understanding of the intricate challenges facing both our public and private sector members and recognizes the common thread that connects the entire recycling industry.

Along with her recycling industry experience, Mary has been an active CRA member and we were fortunate to have Mary serve as the CRA Conference Program Chair for the 26th Annual Conference in Wilmington earlier this year. Her talents, skills and commitment to recycling and to the CRA itself are well known to many. She is excited to get started and will begin her duties on November 16th.  Mary may be reached at mary@cra-recycle.org or 336-972-3565.

As Diane shared with you in her earlier message regarding her upcoming retirement, she will remain for a time in order to ensure a smooth transition for the organization.  Diane may be contacted at diane@cra-recycle.org or 704-467-7774.

Please join us in welcoming Mary to the helm of the Carolina Recycling Association.

Additionally, enter the America Recycles Day #BeRecycled Sweepstakes that can be accessed through the Keep America Beautiful Facebook page (all that is required for entry is the participant's name, email and zip code). A bonus entry will be rewarded to participants who share a unique URL with friends and family.  The sweepstakes is open for entry and will close at 11:59:59 PM EDT on Nov. 18. Survey identifies building blocks of strong recycling culture
Strong Promotion is Key to Increasing Recycling

People who live in places where social norms strongly encourage recycling are more likely to be aware of recycling rules, say they have more options for recycling, and see more of the waste they generate being recycled rather than landfilled, according to a new Pew Research Center survey.  The survey, part of a study covering issues involving climate change, energy and the environment, found that about three-in-ten Americans (28%) say their local community's social norms strongly encourage recycling and reuse. About a fifth (22%) say most people in their communities don't really encourage recycling; the remaining half live in places where, they say, norms around recycling are somewhere in the middle.  Additionally, the people who live in places that strongly encourage recycling also are more likely to say that most types of items can be recycled there, they have better recycling access, and they were more likely to report that their recycling programs accept most types of items.
