The Saints Speak Out!

First, let me say how much I love being here- I am settling in nicely- thanks to so many patient people around me who help me with church doors, the phone, committees and so much more.
This Sunday the saints speak out loud and clear. We are celebrating and remembering many things. We remember all God's people who struggled to bring the faith of our Lord in to their world in both work and worship.
We especially remember the change agents of the 16th century, the Reformers of the medieval church who inadvertently started something new by rejuvenating a church that had somewhat lost its way.
"Familiarity breeds contempt", and the church of the 1500's had lost sight of the true Gospel poverty to which it was called, catering only to the powerful people of the time. The Reformers brought the church of that time back to the heart of God's will by making the scriptures available to everyone- in their language.
The cry against injustice has always been the heart of God's call to mission, and so it is part of ours. The readings, in preparation for Advent, get us ready for the advent theme of peace we will soon celebrate in our community.
In the next three weeks before Advent I will be focusing on:
  • 'Two Visions of Peace': November 6. Haggai 1: 15-2:9 & 2 Thessalonians 2:1-5 & 13-17
  • 'Oil in my Lamp': November 13.  Isaiah 65: 17-25 & 2 Thessalonians 3: 6-13
  • 'Well Done Thou Good and faithful Servants': November 20. Jeremiah 23:1-6 & Luke 23: 33-43
I invite you to ponder the lectionary readings ahead of time, and invite the Spirit speak to you through the word of God each week.
  • There will also be an Advent Bible study beginning November 30 and finishing December 21, covering the four Advent weeks. This study/ reflection is entitled "Christmas: The Good, the Bad & the Ugly" and explores the unique parts that key Biblical figures played in getting ready for the Messiah.  The group will be invited to meet in the Conference Room @ 8:00 pm, following communion. You are invited, if possible, to also join us for the communion service prior to meeting, so as to prepare for the receiving of God's Word.
I wish each and every one of your 'peace and joy in believing'~
Let us do small things with great love- for God! ~

Stewardship Program 2016

Your stewardship package will be ready for pick-up this Sunday on tables in the narthex. This is the time of year when we celebrate both the financial gifts and personal time and talent people have given toward the work of our church home. Thank-you for your ongoing support. It is also time to consider our financial commitments for 2017 to support the operating budget of EMUC and the Mission & Service Fund of the United Church of Canada.

You are invited to return your commitment form by placing it in the box in the church foyer, leaving it in the church office or mailing it using the self- addressed envelope enclosed with your package. Our Envelope Secretary, Mike Ogilvie, will deal with your estimate in confidence.

Last year our Leadership Circle Chair asked several congregants the question "Why do you Give?"

"I give because I believe the Spirit is working within me"
"I give because I know I will make a difference in someone's life, because it gives me a sense of community, because it is easy, because...I can"
"I give because that's where I find my happiness"
"I give because I believe everyone should pitch in where they can"
"I give because my church community is my family"

You are asked to prayerfully consider your own reasons for giving and how you will respond to this call.

Christmas Hampers - Extending Christmas to the Wider Community
Thanksgiving has come and gone, and Advent is fast approaching. With this festive season comes our annual Christmas Hampers program. For approximately 20 years, Irene Pajot has been coordinating our hampers and she is retiring after this year. We need someone to fill this role in order to continue the program in 2017. If you are interested in taking on this coordinating position next year, please contact the church office. If you like, we would be happy to include you in this year's activities, to find out how things work and what is involved in the role. You can learn first hand from our 20 year expert, Irene, as she completes her final year of volunteering.
We are also in need of volunteers to help with various tasks, many of which are easy and not very time consuming.  Anyone able to assist, please contact the church office or add your name to the sign-up list which will be at the back of the church in November. For more information, contact Sandra Witterick, Community Life Chairperson at sandra.witterick@gmail.com.

The presentation will be one hour long and there is no charge.  Plan to attend and learn how to protect yourself.  Invite your friends and neighbours. We need 30 attendees to hold this event.
