This Land Was Made for You and Me: A Panel Discussion on Refugee Resettlement
Thursday, November 3rd

This timely program will feature an introduction to forced migration by refugee trauma recovery specialist, Mick Hirsch. Two refugee survivors who have successfully resettled to the United States from Laos and Nepal will share their experiences moving from their homeland, to refugee camps, to a new home in the U.S. All are invited to come hear stories haunting, humorous, and hopeful!

From Ocean to Table and Challenges Along the Way

Bringing seafood from the waters of the world to your dinner plate is a journey that involves many stakeholders. Today's consumer insists upon traceability, sustainability, and accountability, starting with the fisherman and finishing with the fishmonger. Members of the Marden family of Wellesley's Captain Marden's Seafood will explain where your seafood comes from, how it was caught and the length of time it takes to get to your plate.

Wellesley Society of Artists: Reception, Awards & Demonstration

All are welcome to a reception with light refreshments at 6:30 PM. Awards will be presented for the WSA's library jury exhibit at 7:00 pm, followed by a demonstration by local artist, Frederick Kubitz, who is  known for his colorful oils and watercolors of the Boston Harbor and Landscape.

Laszlo Gardony is a critically acclaimed artist who has brought his soulful improvisations and compositions to audiences in 26 countries. A winner of the Great American Jazz Piano Competition, Gardony has been called "a pianist worthy of praise within the highest pantheon of performers" by Jazz Review and "a great pianist" by Dave Brubeck. The Loss of the U.S.S. Quincy

In honor of Veterans Day, local historian Bob Begin will discuss the history of the heavy cruiser U.S.S. Quincy from her launching in her namesake city during the Great Depression to her fateful role in the Pacific during World War II. He will also explore the lives of some of the men who served on board during the war.
Jointly sponsored by the Wellesley Historical Society, the Wellesley Free Library, and the Wellesley Council on Aging.
 
Documentary Film: MAKERS - Women in Space
Tuesday, November 29th
7:00 PM  Wakelin Room
Some of the women pioneers in the U.S. space program passed the same grueling tests as male astronauts, only to be dismissed as a distraction by NASA, the military, and even Lyndon Johnson. It wasn't until 1995 that Eileen Collins became the first woman to pilot a spacecraft. The film includes interviews with influential females and ends with the next generation of women engineers, mathematicians and astronauts who continue to make small but significant steps forward.

Now on Display: WHS "Community Box" Project

Wellesley High School students created the Community Box project as part of the cross-discipline Evolutions Program.   After learning about anthropology and concepts of what makes a community, the  students  conducted interviews with citizens throughout town, then communicated their understanding of a theme through multiple techniques. You can explore this interactive multimedia installation at the main library until mid-November. It is directly across from the entrance to the Jackie's Room computer lab.

 
Winter Wonderland Tea Party with Elsa and Olaf!

On Saturday, December 3rd, the Hills Branch Library will be transformed into a magical winter wonderland! Guests can choose from one of two tea times: 10 AM or 2 PM. Families will enjoy hands-on activities, animated readings and festive music while delighting in sweet treats and sips of warm cocoa or tea.  Tickets are $30 for adults and $20 for children. All proceeds benefit the Wellesley Free Library Foundation's ongoing support of the Hills and Fells branch libraries.

JSTOR: A Unique, Online Collection of Articles & eBooks

Academics, local authors, students, and interested Wellesley residents have made hundreds of searches on the arts, humanities, and social sciences in  JSTOR.    This unique database of articles from 2000+ current and archival journals, books, and primary sources offers information not found in the usual places.

Now this database also includes over 40,000 e-books from academic publishers!  This is exciting for any serious student!  Sign in through  our list of databases and try it out; then tell your colleagues and friends!

Sensory Storytime
Monday, November 7th, 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM
Main Library Story Hour Room
This monthly program for children ages 4+ is presented by trained staff from the OTA Koomar Center of Watertown. Each 60 minute session includes stories, songs, and sensory play, as well as take home ideas for parents and caregivers. Registration period begins 1 week in advance of event and is required.

 

Infant Massage

Parents and caretakers of infants and pre-crawling babies will learn the art of infant massage from Sheryl White, IAIM Certified Infant Massage Instructor. Registration begins on Oct 31 and is required.

The Wellesley Society of Artists (WSA)  is a community of artists founded in 1933 for the purpose of encouraging and supporting local artists and for promoting fine arts in Wellesley. Members come from all over the Boston metro area and beyond.

Wellesley Society of Artists Reception, Awards & Demonstration!

"Fritz" as he goes by, is known for his colorful oils and watercolors of the Boston Harbor and Landscape.  He is a longstanding member of the Boston Guild and a past president of the Wellesley Society of Artists. Children's Exhibit Cases
Endangered Animals Project
Last spring, 30 Hunnewell Elementary School students in 2nd- 5th grade participated in an after-school program, Students for Environmental Awareness. They researched endangered species and illustrated them in their natural habitats. During the month of November, you can view these illustrations at the main library.

The WFL will close at 5 PM on Wednesday, November 23rd and be closed all day on Thursday, November 24th.
