Scripture Lesson
John 1:40-51

Sermon
"Will the Real Jesus Please Stand Up"

This Sunday
So let's begin this Bible study of the Gospel of John and see where it takes us. This Sunday we will explore the four gospels to see which Jesus is the one we are seeking to follow. Each of the gospel writers utilized a platform from which their ideas of Jesus spring. The title of the sermon on Sunday is, "Will the Real Jesus Please Stand Up." There are so many ideas, so many disagreements, so many arguments, but John makes some points the others seem to miss. So let's explore some of those. No suggested reading this week, but I will ask you to make four or five statements about what you believe about Jesus. It can simply be words, phrases, or even scriptures you utilize as your definition. Then, over the next few weeks we will examine a wedding in a neighboring community on World Communion Sunday, and what it seeks to say about Jesus. Then we will explore the time of turning tables as an act of justice in  a world surrounded by injustice when Pastor Laura preaches. Then we will address what it means to be "born again," or "born from above" and specifically examine John 3:16. Then, as we continue we will explore the whole idea of what it means to decrease and be used as we allow God to increase in our hearts, minds and actions (Paul Benz as our guest preacher for that Sunday). Our Sundays are going to be fun and upbeat, all while helping us learn about these stories of "Good News," and Jesus as the light of the world who is, even today, wanting to fill our hearts and direct our lives.

MINISTRY NEWS
Green Team meeting TODAY
September 21
TODAY on Thursday, September 21 at 11:30, the Green Team will meet at the church. Pastor Laura will provide a light lunch and all are welcome to come and be a part of this re-energized environmental ministry at Aldersgate. If you would like to be part of the team but can't make this first meeting, please contact Pastor Laura to let her know what would be a better time for you and/or how you would like to participate. Meetings are not for everyone but we do need your ideas.
Memorial Service TOMORROW
September 22
We will celebrate the life of Len Knapp tomorrow on Friday, September 22 at 2:00pm.  Len and his wife Marilyn began attending Aldersgate a few years ago.  They came to the second service and sang in the choir.  There will be a reception after the memorial service.  If you are able to help serve food during the reception, provide cookies or help with setup or clean up, please sign up or contact Lea Fox, 425-641-6796.
Youth Assistant Pledge
Have you heard them?  Do you see them?  Our Youth  Ministry has grown beyond belief with busy, happy kids (and their parents) filling our halls with their enthusiasm.  Youth are regularly participating in Youth Group, worship services, retreats, service projects, dinners, and now Sunday School.  Things have grown so much that Jen Hoerber needs a Youth Assistant to help her plan and implement the youth program.  Your help is needed to raise $15,000 to support the annual salary of a Youth Assistant.  By September 30, please fill out and turn in this pledge card or go to the church website to make a donation to our "Youth Ministry."
Resource Library News
Bob Olson's latest poems have been added to "Aldersgate Poems: Inspired by Junior Church and Sermons," displayed on the library mobile cart.  See the last 4 pages for copies of Perception, Justice, My Lord's Prayer, Apocalypse, and Love, Love, Love, Love
Aldersgate Acolytes
"Jesus said: "I am the light of the world" (John 8:12).   The lighting of the candles is a meaningful part of our regular worship services.   The presence of the light reminds us of Jesus' coming into our world and into our lives. The light is carried into the worship service as a symbol of Jesus' coming into the presence of the worshiping community. At the end of the service, the light is carried out into the world to show that Jesus Christ is for all people everywhere. Children are invited to sign up to be Aldersgate Acolytes here.  Children should check in with the ushers 10 minutes before service on the day they are signed up to acolyte.  The ushers will show you how and when to light the candles and extinguish them.  Questions? Contact is Kate Ingalls.
Cookies Needed
The freezer is bare!  Please donate cookies for the refreshment time between services.  Homemade or store bought cookies, muffins, and sweet breads would be appreciated. Please put them in the kitchen freezer.
Lay Leadership Positions
Please consider using your God given gifts (talents, skills, interests) to serve at Aldersgate.    CLICK HERE  for a list of the places that we know of right now where your talents would be valued.  Please take some time to pray about which of these opportunities might be right for you at this time in your faith life. Pastor Laura and Christian Hampson are interested in identifying gifts in our church community and empowering people to use those gifts to the glory of God.  Pastor Laura and Christian are available to answer your questions and/or find the answers to them. They are looking forward to talking with you.
Heartworks Workshops in October
Aldersgate will host a series of four sessions on Monday afternoons (10/9, 10/16, 10/23, 10/30) about end-of-life planning led by Martha VanDeMark of the Heartwork group. This series of workshops is a powerful way to discuss our own dying process and make our own decisions about what a good death might look like. The sessions will be facilitated discussions of 6-10 people and the cost is $125 per person or $100 per person if there is more than one person from the same family. Scholarships are available. It's a great experience for couples or children and parents to do together. Anyone who is old enough to have a driver's license is old enough to participate in the group. Please sign up on Sunday's attendance form or contact Pastor Laura if you are interested as the group is almost full. If there is enough interest, a second group may form at a later date.
