Reflections from Fr. Rick

Surely the presence of the Lord is in this place.
I can feel God's mighty power and God's grace.
I can hear the brush of angel's wings,
I see glory on each face.
Surely the presence of the Lord
is in this place.

We will sing these words this Sunday, St. Michael's Day, as we celebrate and give thanks for God's presence with us.  I hope you will join us for brunch after the 10:15 liturgy.

Something really is happening between heaven and earth, between God and us at St. Michael's. The angels of God really are ascending and descending. There is traffic, movement, and activity between heaven and earth and like God's angels, we participate with God to make God's presence known and felt in our community.

In the past few months God has let us make his presence felt in so many new ways:
  • Helping kids get great start to a new school year by distributing backpacks and supplies for more than 50 children at Lake Silver Elementary School.
  • Feed My Lambs is our new ministry of compassion to hundreds of food-insecure students at Lake Silver and Edgewater High School who no longer will feel hunger pangs at night or on the weekend thanks to your faithful generosity and reaching out your hands in love to those in need.
  • Opening the doors of St. Michael's to those in need after Irma. (Thanks Mike Robertson for your leadership.)
  • Last Sunday we began our new 9 am Children's Family Service -- our intentional effort to reach out to the countless "unchurched" families in the area with the good news of God's reconciling love. The response was very positive as 146 people joined us (80-100 people new to St. Michael's) for our first service!
  • Beginning on Wednesday, October 18 we'll start our Fall teaching series: The Good and Beautiful God, Falling in Love with the God Jesus Knows.
Yes, something is happening between heaven and earth; angels of God are ascending and descending and active in our midst at St. Michael's.  Surely the presence of God is in this place!

In Christ's Love,

Wednesday Night Fall Teaching Series

The Good and Beautiful God: Falling in Love with the God Jesus Knows

Beginning Wednesday, October 18 6:30 - 8 pm with Fr. Rick leading

We all have ideas that we tell ourselves about God and how He works in our lives. Some are true-but many are false. These thoughts determine not only who we are, but how we live.

In fact, the most important thing about a person is what they think about God. The path to spiritual transformation begins here. This deep, loving and transformative series will help you discover the narratives that Jesus lived by  -- to know the Lord He knew and the kingdom He proclaimed -- and to practice spiritual exercises that will help you grow in the knowledge of our good and beautiful God.

Though delayed by Hurricane Irma, a church directory is in the works. Families and individuals will soon be able to upload their favorite photo for their listing. ONLY if you do not have a photo to use, Deacon Carter Smith will be in Quigley Hall following the 10:15 am service on Oct. 1, 8 and 15 to shoot a quick photo for you.  Stay tuned for instructions on how to upload your photo for the directory!
New Service Times

With the addition of our new Children's Family Service at 9 am, our early service on Sundays now starts at 7:45 am.  The 10:15 am service start time remains the same.

About 146 people came to the inaugural Children's service last week!  Fr. Rick reports that as many as 80 to 100 had never been at St. Michael's before and "heard the welcoming love of Christ."
Congratulations, Rev. Greg Favazza!

Deacon Greg Favazza was ordained in a beautiful ceremony by Bishop Greg Brewer at the Cathedral Church of St. Luke on Saturday, Sept. 9.  Many blessings to our newly ordained servant of God!

God Bless Our Teachers

The devoted teachers of St. Michael's were blessed and given their commission on Sunday at the 10:15 am service.  Thank you, Teachers!

Hurricane Relief

Our special thanks go to Sr. Warden Susie DiDea and Jr. Warden Roger Trubey for their hard work cleaning the church grounds and dealing with the slight damage after Hurricane Irma.  Thank you, too, to Eric Olson who masterfully rigged the church wifi to allow some internet while the phones and computers are not working!  Thank you for your continued patience as we wait to have our wifi and phones fully restored. We appreciate all who came to lend a hand around the church campus after Irma.

The need for hurricane and disaster relief around the world is great.  As you are led and able, please consider a donation to:

Gleaning, Saturday, October 7th
What is Gleaning?  Gleaning (also called scrounging) is the act of collecting leftover crops from farmers' fields after they have been commercially harvested or on fields where it is not economically profitable to harvest.  We are partnering up with the Society of St. Andrew to help end hunger.  Our group will go to a local farm and glean their leftover harvest where it will be donated to a local food pantry or charity in need.  Bring your whole family!  No one is too old or too young for the job.  This is a great way to show our children we can make a difference in the fight against hunger.
Closer to our date we will get our job assignment.  We know it will be in the morning.  We will pass on details as we get them.

Club 412
Our special club for our fourth and fifth grade members of St. Michael's Church will begin meeting once a month for social and outreach activities. Club 412 members are encouraged to bring friends along.

October 8th, 5 - 7 pm

Director of Youth Ministry Greg Favazza

St. Michael's Choirs helped lead the sacred music for the Ordination of Deacon Greg Favazza at the Cathedral of St. Luke. A choir of 50+ sang that day from several churches in the area. Pictured is Music Director Andrew Walker with his granddaughter, Azure, the only Youth Choir member in the Diocese who sang!  SMC's Mike Robertson also sang.

Celebrating Our Patronal Saint!
