Grace: It's Our Way of Life
As Episcopal Christians we
Worship at home daily and together weekly; Study the scriptures, our tradition, and what it means to be a disciple today; Serve our families, our parish, and our world in the name of  Christ. Everything we do is done with an ethic of Welcome because we are only here by Grace.
Where have you welcomed,  worshiped, studied or served?

Grace welcomes The Rev. Kathryn Costas
by Clare Andreasson, Senior Warden

The vestry is delighted to bring you the news that The Rev. Kathryn Costas has accepted a call to serve as full-time Intentional Interim Rector at Grace Church.  We finalized our covenant with her at our vestry meeting on Tuesday, September 19.  She will begin working with us the first week of October.

Kathryn has significant experience in working with parishes in transition.  She comes to us with the highest of recommendations.  She will serve as rector-in-charge of our parish, fulfilling all the responsibilities of rector at Grace.  In addition, she will lead us, as a parish, through a process designed to prepare us to recommission our search committee, relaunch our search, and ultimately, call a new full-time rector.  click here to continue reading...

Music at 10
Our guest musician for the prelude this morning is bassoonist Pierson Klein. Pierson is a junior at West Senior High where he plays in both band and orchestra. He is also very active in Robotics - his team last year competed at the World championships! He studies privately with Kathy Will.

We also welcome Joyful Noise this morning as they return from summer break. These three young ladies are now freshmen in high school and we appreciate their commitment to our music despite their busy schedules. Earlier this summer Chyenne Igunbor, Elsa Merrill, and Kate Blondia completed the third level of Voice for Life training which includes testing on the skills of sight-singing, interval recognition, and music theory. Each received a pin to acknowledge this accomplishment.  Their goal is to continue their training and complete Level IV this year.

Organ Update
If you have wandered through the choir area of the sanctuary recently, you might have noticed there are no more black cords crossing your path! With generous gifts from the estate of Jo Collins and the Hughes Foundation, we have been able to hang the choir microphones and move the power source to the organ, eliminating the tripping hazards. Through this process we have been unable to use the organ (you may have noticed more piano music), waiting for a part from the organ builder. If all goes as scheduled you should soon be hearing the pipes enhancing our worship.

Seeking Healing Team members
The Healing Team offers laying-on-of-hands, anointing with oil, and healing prayers each weekend at the Saturday 5pm service, and on the first two Sundays of the month at the 10am service. We are seeking additional members to assist us with this holy sacrament of healing body, mind and spirit. Please contact Marilyn Dressel if you are interested, at 231-929-2575.

New snack time for Youth Group begins Sunday, Sept. 24
Parents of J2A students - every week we run short on time so we've come up with a plan.  Since the kids need a chance to eat, check-in, and still be finished by 12:30 pm, we will serve snacks right after church in the LL4 youth group room.  This will give us 10 to 20 extra minutes every week without changing the schedule. Please send the kids down right after service and we'll give this a try.   Thank you.

Cherubs gather Sept. 24 after 10am service

All children between the ages of 3 and 7 are invited to participate in this new musical group at Grace.  Music and Worship Director Kathy Will leads the group in singing, rhythmic instruments, musical games and expressions of praise to God.

Developer plans neighborhood meeting at Grace on Wed., Sept. 27 at 6pm
Please join us in the Parish Hall for a presentation by Peninsula Place developer Tom McIntrye. He will explain plans for the proposed ten story condo development (60 units) to be built behind the church on the Running, Wise, Ford law firm's parcel. This is the time to ask questions and learn about how that block on State Street will be developed in the coming year.

In addition, the Traverse City Planning Commission will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, Oct 3 at 7pm to consider a special land use permit requested by Mr. McIntyre to exceed the 60 foot limit on building height.

Public comments may be submitted at the meeting, or to the Planning Commission via email at [email protected], or by mail at 400 Boardman Ave., Traverse City, MI 49684. You may view the special land use permit request at the Planning Dept., M-F 8am to noon and 1-5pm at the Governmental Center. We hope that as many of you as possible will attend one or both meetings. Let your voices be heard!

It's Harvest Time!
Join us for Coffee Hour Sept. 30 and Oct. 1
In conjunction with the fall season, we're kicking off "A Grateful Harvest"; our annual Stewardship Campaign. There will be information and appropriately themed "goodies" next weekend after each service.

Celebrating generations at Grace
Did you know that some families have been worshipping at Grace for five generations?!  The 150th Committee has compiled a list of families going back three, four and five generations, but we're not sure if the list is complete - should your name be there?  Look for the display in the Commons, and add your family's name to our parish history.

Collection for Hygiene Pantry
Sept. 17 - Oct. 1
Imagine trying to make a budget stretch every month, knowing that it may not be enough.  A minor car repair, a day or two off with a sick child and the budget is now in tatters and may be for a month or more.

So many of us are fortunate enough to be able to afford the essentials and not have to choose among the basic necessities that allow us to maintain our dignity.

The Love INC Community Hygiene Pantry is located at Jubilee House and provides essential supplies like toilet paper, laundry detergent, shampoo and more.  A visit to the pantry can be a blessing when it is fully stocked or a deflating disappointment when it is out of stock!  Just like our neighbors in need, the budget for supplies is tested on a regular basis.  To this end, we are looking for collections of specific items that allow our dollars to stretch further.

For the TWO WEEKS of Sept 17- Oct. 1, 2017 let's try to "fill the box" in the commons with donations of laundry detergent, shampoo, deodorant (neutral scents) and toothpaste and tooth brushes (single packages please).
If you would like to make a cash do nation, list Hygiene Pantry on the memo line of your check.

Let's try to fill the box to help fill the shelves for our neighbors in need!

Seeking EfM graduates
Have you graduated from or participated in Education for Ministry?  The 150th Committee would like to compile a list of Grace parishioners with EfM ties to include in an upcoming article.  It does not matter where you did your coursework - we'd like to include all EfM graduates and participants. Please contact the office to add your name to the list.

Grace Explorers meet Oct. 3
Rosemary Hagan, D. Min.,  will present the history and practice of Spiritual Direction on Tues., Oct. 3, 11:30 am, in the Parish Hall. We will explore its scriptural and early church roots, and why people across the centuries have met with a trained spiritual director to explore their faith journey and relationship with God. Attendees will gain a greater understanding of the role of spiritual direction in Christian formation. Bring a bag lunch and a snack or dessert to share (optional) and join us for this informative topic. All are welcome. Contact: Sandy Seppala Gyr, [email protected], 703-57-7925.

CROP Walk is coming Oct. 8
A chill in the air, migrating geese, and trees with the courage to change into beautiful arrays of color signal autumn.  Along with the wonders of fall, so too comes the CROP Walk.  Did you know the CROP Walk started in 1981 with Grace's rector, the Rev. Tom Stoll, as coordinator?  Grace has had a long history with the CROP Walk and we want to continue our tradition of walkers and generosity.

The CROP Walk is Sunday, October 8 with registration at 1:30 and the walk starting at 2:00.  It is our goal this year to have 20 walkers to traverse the 5 mile trek through our lovely Traverse City.  It is a chance to enjoy the beauty of our area and most importantly to walk in unity with other Christians of different faiths.  We walk because they walk all over the world just to get daily food and water.  Join us!

Helen Hankins and Sue Kelly will be recruiting walkers in the Commons during the month of September.  If you cannot walk, please consider a donation for one of our walkers.  If you want to know more about the CROP Walk stop the Commons or give Sue Kelly a call/email (231-223-8876 / [email protected]).

Turn in your Oleson's receipts to benefit the Grace Food Pantry!

Oleson's Community Share Program

Here's how it works:
  1. You shop at Oleson's for groceries (liquor sales do not qualify for points)
  2. Turn in your receipts to the church.  Look for the envelope on the bulletin board in the Parish Hall, and place your receipts inside it.
  3. We submit receipts back to Oleson's
  4. We are granted cash rewards for the food pantry ($1 spent on groceries = 1 cent in Community Share points)

For every $5000 in receipts we submit, we receive $50 in cash for our food pantry.  Every little bit helps!

Thank you for participating!
