MERCY MEMO PARENT E-NEWSLETTER - September 22, 2017
Message from Mrs. Sattler
Dear Mercy Families,

I enjoyed speaking with many of you during the recent President/Principal Breakfast, New Parent Orientation, Parent Night, and our Mom's Club and Dad's Club welcoming meetings. I hope families are finding opportunities to connect with each other as well, since the high school experience can be an enjoyable time in building community for those who support our students.

Parent Night was our most recent event in welcoming parents back to a new school year. Whether or not you were able to attend, we would love to hear your feedback as we plan for future Parent Nights. Please participate in this brief anonymous survey to help us ensure this evening is relevant to your interests and accessible with your schedule.

The 2017-2018 school year is in full swing with classrooms energized by the presence of our Mercy girls! I am pleased to share with you some of the current activities and upcoming events you may find of interest.

Health and Safety
Student Health Newsletter: As we begin this year, our health and safety initiative continues to be a top priority. Mrs. Navarro ('05) a registered nurse and Attendance Office team member, has rolled out a Mercy girl newsletter to share healthy tips relevant to teenage years. The current issue focuses on resources for managing stress in a student's active life.

AED Donation: We are pleased to announce that the Wes Leonard Heart Foundation will be making an AED (Automatic Electronic Defibrillator) donation to our Mercy Athletic Department. This AED will be carried by our Athletic Trainer, Michelle Gambino, at all times when supporting our athletes as well as our competitors in the event of a medical emergency. Many thanks to the Wes Leonard Heart Team for your generosity and commitment to the safety of student athletes!

Vision Screening: Did you know that at least 80% of learning is facilitated through vision? Impaired vision is one of the most common health problems affecting children. By high school graduation one third will have a vision problem requiring correction. To assure that ninth graders have adequate vision to meet educational demands, the Michigan Public Health Code, Act 368, requires vision screening for ninth graders, or screening in conjunction with drivers training. To meet these screening needs, the Oakland County Health Division offers free vision screening by appointment at the North Oakland Health Center and South Oakland Health Center locations. Parents can call (248) 424-7070.

Academic News
Student Clubs: Last week was Club Expo Day , where all Mercy students joined a club from a selection of over 25 offerings ranging fro m Quiz Bowl to Healthy Habits. Club involvement offers students an opportunity to explore areas of interest and connect with other students who may be outside of their usual friend groups.

NHS Tutors:
Our National Honor Society members have been working hard to customize a tutoring program that best fits the academic needs of the students they support. Replacing our traditional Tuesday after school tutoring sessions is a new system that allows for requests of specific content-area help at times more suitable for both students and the tutors. We are thankful to our dedicated NHS officers who have done the preparations necessary to launch this new initiative. Students requesting tutoring simply visit the NHS Tutoring course page on Schoology to schedule a tutoring session. Parents can also request a tutoring session for their daughter by using this form, which is linked on our web site under Academics.

Robotics: Student representatives from our Riveters will be visiting the GM Vehicle Engineering Center in Warren on September 21st. Students will participate in a demonstration of our robotics program and promote discussion with GM employees about the value of mentoring students in engineering related fields.

Catholic Identity and Outreach
Clothing Drive: Each year, all Catholic high schools within the Archdiocese of Detroit come together in a clothing drive outreach project, Champions of Charity . This St. Vincent De Paul sponsored event is held in preparation for the upcoming cold weather to provide assistance for our neighbors in need. Champions of Charity is a fun competition between these schools to determine who will win the trophy for collecting the most clothing donations by weight per student population. For the past two years, Gabriel Richard Catholic High School in Riverview has been the reigning champion . The Champions of Charity promotional material asks, "Who will dethrone Gabriel Richard", to which we respond, " Have you ever met a Mercy girl! " Champions of Charity collections will be accepted through September 29th. A strategy tip: although all clothing donations are welcome, weight is the factor to winning. Therefore heavier clothing items such as boots and coats help tip the scales! We appreciate your support as we work together to ensure those in need stay warm throughout the winter months.

Beatification Mass Tickets: The metro-area faithful are brimming with pride for the upcoming beatification of one of Detroit's own, Fr. Solanus Casey. Tickets for the Beatification Mass held at Ford Field on Saturday, Nov 18th, will be available online to the public beginning October 9th at 9am. To reserve tickets, visit Ford Field . Mark your calendar as these limited free tickets are expected to "sell out" early. Further event information may be accessed here .

Student Outreach: Our students are concerned with the vast needs of those impacted by the devastating effects of the recent hurricanes. This sparked student action to host an Adviser Group coin war competition! Students collected $1360.36 to donate to the Humane Society and the American Red Cross. Winning Adviser Groups are as follows:

  • First Place: Ms. Robinet who will be awarded a pizza lunch
  • Second Place: Ms. MacDougall who will be awarded ice cream

Teaching Mass: We recently welcomed Fr. Jerry Brzezinski  to Mercy and are thrilled with his commitment to help our students make relevant connections to their faith. Fr Jerry is currently working with our freshwomen Religious Studies teachers to celebrate a "teaching mass", where he will explain the significance of the elements, gestures, prayers and responses used throughout the service.

I thank you for allowing me to share with you the many reasons we have to be proud of our school. As our Mercy students remind us during daily announcements, "it's not what it is, but what it can become ". Thank you for allowing us to support your daughter as she becomes a woman who makes a difference!

May God's Grace and Blessings be in your path,

Mercy Day Mass
You are invited to Mercy High School for our Mercy Day Mass Monday, September 25 at 10:15am in the Auditorium. Worship with us as we celebrate the Feast Day of Our Lady of Mercy and the anniversary of the opening of the first House of Mercy in Dublin, Ireland by The Venerable Catherine McAuley.

Catherine McAuley devoted her life to the poor, sick and uneducated, and today we continue her legacy of caring and compassion in the name of Mercy. In her spirit, "Our center is God from Whom all our actions should spring as from their source, and no exterior actions should separate us from Him."

We look forward to sharing this prayerful experience to reflect on our rich and vibrant heritage, and what it means to be a part of Mercy today!

Adventures Abroad
Paris, Lyon, Nice and Rome
Monsieur and Madame Campbell and the American Council for International Studies co-sponsored a private educational tour for an amazing group of 42 Mercy French students and their family members to "Paris, Lyon, Nice and Rome" this past summer for two wonderful weeks from June 28-July 12. The tour focused on cultural connections and comparisons while the students interacted first-hand with the French.

Paris became the classroom as we immediately visited the Fragonard parfumerie to learn the art of making French perfume upon arrival in Paris. Also in Paris, later in the tour, everyone enjoyed private lessons in the Jardin de Luxembourg learning the traditional game of pétanque. The students thoroughly enjoyed dancing and dining with the local French at a traditional Guinguette, a riverside restaurant on the River Marne. We were graciously invited to join the locals on the dance floor learning the steps to the popular Valse Musette.

An educational city tour of Paris provided visits to the major monument and varied districts of the City of Light, including Le Champs Elysées, Notre Dame, La Tour Eiffel, Les Invalides, Le Louvre, Versailles and Montmartre. The group enjoyed an evening boat ride on the Seine river and said goodbye to Paris before adventuring to Burgundy and Provence. The culinary adventure began in Dijon with mustard tasting and ended in Lyon, the renowned capital of "la gastronomie", where the group enjoyed a traditional Bouchon Lyonnais dinner.

The highlights in Provence included Avignon, the Pont du Gard, Arles, Saint Paul de Vence and Nice, where the group enjoyed a restful day at the beach and swimming in the Mediterranean Sea before continuing to Pisa, Florence and Rome.

The students gained authentic, valuable experiences during the trip interacting, understanding and speaking French with the French. The country of France became our classroom providing fond memories that will hopefully inspire further study in the future in a semester abroad program. "La joie de vivre" is contagious and travel certainly changes lives!
Switzerland & Italy!
Over the summer, Mercy Latin students and families embarked on a 12-day trip to Switzerland and Italy!  Highlights included:
  • climbing Mt. Rigi
  • Swiss yodeling lessons
  • gondola rides in Venice
  • the Leaning Tower of Pisa
  • a boat ride around the island of Capri
  • the ancient city of Pompeii
  • walking through the Colosseum
  • visiting the Vatican and the Sistine Chapel
It was both a fun and educational experience for all who traveled.  Visit facebook.com/mercyjcl/ for more photos!
Rendez-Vous at Ste. Anne de Detroit
French students and their families joined the French community in the Detroit-Windsor areas to celebrate the first annual "Rendez-vous" at Ste. Anne de Détroit parish on Sunday September 10. The Ste. Anne de Détroit parish hosted the event to celebrate the French and Native American cultures and to commemorate and celebrate the parish's French roots.

The French Catholics who came with Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac brought Catholicism to the shores of Detroit in 1701. Students and their families toured this beautiful Gothic church and were in awe of the stunning stained glass windows sponsored by prominent French families as well as the French architectural influence in the building of the church.

It was also the kick-off for the first exhibition of a selection of Fr. Gabriel Richard's letters, books and artifacts in the chapel of the church. Fr. Richard came to our country from France and was pastor from 1802-1832. During his presence in Détroit, Fr. Richard was an outstanding pastor, educator and civic leader. We also saw in the exhibition, the first stone altar of the original church.

The "Rendez-vous" began with a co-celebrated Mass by Père Pierre Ingram and Monsignor Kosanke who celebrated the bilingual Mass in French and English. Following this beautiful Mass, Mme and M. Campbell attended the festival with her students who enjoyed French luncheon items i.e. quiche, salade, crêpes, poutine from local vendors and enjoyed authentic French music featuring Dr. Marcel Bénéteau and Trois Bouffons. French crafts, games, French Canadian Stories and Folklore by Genot Picor were also highlights of the festival.

Focus on Learning
GPA in Powerschool

Please note the following communication was shared with all Mercy students in regards to GPA function in Powerschool.

Now that we are three weeks into the school year, you likely have assignment grades and possibly even quiz and test grades posted in PowerSchool. Many of you have noticed that the current grade point average (GPA) display has disappeared. Was this on purpose? Will it ever reappear? Will colleges still see my GPA? The answer to all of these questions is YES.

So why did we disable this feature? The reasoning for this decision is complex. With the introduction of online grading systems, such as PowerSchool, adopted by schools for scheduling capabilities and the collection of student data - demographics, attendance and grades - all into one system; the ability to check grades by students and parents electronically became available. Now that many of us have devices in our possession at all times, the practice of checking grades has increased dramatically, especially checking every miniscule change in GPA. A grade point average is the reflection of many grades over time, not a one time snapshot measuring academic progress.

Teachers have witnessed how students lose focus in class to check a notification of a new grade posting. This can be even more distracting when the grade received is disappointing. Studies show a dramatic rise in student anxiety over the past few years and the habit of constantly checking GPA/grades is a known contributing factor to this increase. Mercy's Counseling office has seen this as well. Rather than focusing on learning and using an assignment, lab, quiz, test or essay grade as feedback to assess the level of mastery of a concept or skill and then make improvements or re-learn what was misunderstood; students often focus their attention on the impact of a specific grade on their overall GPA. This, in turn, affects motivation and student well being. We believe that continually posting the current GPA can distract students from the learning experience, the excitement of learning something new, the challenge of mastering a new skill, the pursuit of knowledge, learning how to fix or cope with a mistake or failure - or even more importantly, discovering more about themselves in becoming lifelong learners. For these reasons, we have decided to disable the GPA feature on PowerSchool.

Will the current GPA ever reappear? The plan is to enable the feature the week of Parent Teacher Conferences ( October 3), the last week in November (11/27) and once final grades are posted. If it is imperative you know your GPA, you are welcome to stop in to see your counselor or Ms. Rozman. Grade Point Average will be displayed on both your report card and transcript for college. This is your true GPA (an average of your final grades for each semester completed).

Keep in mind that at any specific point in time you can still assess your progress in a course by looking at the overall grade in that course along with the assignments that make up that grade.  What you won't be distracted by is the constant fluctuation of GPA every time a new grade is entered into Powerschool.

If you would like to read some research on how a focus on checking grades may impact student learning, please check out the articles below:
