E-News Blast for September 21st, 2017

A Message from Jan

Hi everyone, wow summer is finally here!  I don't like extreme heatI know many are enjoying the heat and humidity, I am just not one of them.  Looks like we have another week of July-like weather.  It's hard to enjoy a roaring campfire in this kind of weather.  I love starting a fire in the morning at the trailer and just feeding it all day.  It's just not likely to happen when the temperature with humidity is 36 degrees

Tuesday this week I spoke at a conference on Smart Cities at the CIRA AGM.  CIRA is the Canadian Internet Registry Authority. On the panel with me was Dan Matheson, Mayor of Stratford, Sri Elaprolu, Senior Manager & Global Lead Public Sector IoT, Amazon and Bruce Holland Exec Director at CIRA.  It was great to have the opportunity to talk about all that is happening in Ottawa on SMART Cities. As one of three Council approved Smart City leaders, I am excited that we will soon bring forward an Ottawa based plan, Smart City 2.0.

Since 1962, two generations of the Ruiter family have farmed Black Rapids Dairy Farm, on land leased from the National Capital Commission (NCC). Throughout that time they have been a staple in the community. As you may have heard, on Friday September 8 their livelihood was destroyed by a devastating fire.  Although the family had insurance, sadly the damage goes far beyond what was insurable. Insurance will not provide enough to cover the massive loss and to rebuild their lives. The early estimates of damage exceed $1 million. Please visit the gofundme page. These funds will assist with their immediate and ongoing needs.

RCL Branch 641 Bursary Program
Application Deadline October 31st, 2017

The Royal Canadian Legion (RCL) recognizes the need for a post-secondary education to prosper and believes that our young people are the leaders of tomorrow. As a result, the RCL offers to help them with partial financing of a post-secondary education through the granting of annual bursaries.

The Bursary Program is designed to assist students entering or continuing their post-secondary education, including courses and programs of a technical and vocational nature, outside of and beyond secondary school. Approved bursary assistance is not based upon scholastic standing but rather on the successful admission status to a post-secondary institution or successful completion of one or more years leading to a recognized degree, diploma or certificate. Students applying for assistance may be granted a Bursary based on documented need, per scholastic year (September to August), as determined by the Branch Bursary Committee.

Eligibility, Selection Criteria and Application Forms for our Branch 641 Bursary, can be found on Branch 641 webpage, under the Youth tab

All applications must be submitted by October 31st, 2017 for the academic year ending June 2018 and hand delivered or mailed to "RCL 641 Bursary Committee" at the Royal Canadian Legion at:

Hydro Stats for August

The latest report coming in from Hydro Ottawa shows that our region (South) is now 3rd overall in both service interruptions and the total time of interruptions.  This is an improvement from last month's statistics.  The largest and lengthiest service interruption in August was due to a lightning strike which caused a transmission to trip.

Healthy Lunches and Snacks for Back to School

image
Packing healthy and tasty lunches for your child to bring to school is an important task. A healthy lunch will give your child energy to play and learn. Follow Canada's Food Guide to make sure your child is eating a healthy meal at lunchtime. Try to include 3 to 4 food groups in your child's lunch bag.
Lunch Box tips
  • Ask your child for their favourite lunch and snack ideas.

  • Try switching the bread in your child's lunch. Switch between whole grain pita wraps, tortillas and flatbread.

  • Aim to include 2 food groups in your child's snack. For example, cheese and whole grain crackers or yogurt and a small oatmeal muffin.

  • Include your child in lunch planning by bringing them with you to the grocery store, or having them help put foods into containers.

  • Lunch box food safety is important. Try to make the lunch the night before. Place all the food and beverage items in the fridge overnight. Place all items in an insulated lunch box just before heading out to school. Add a small ice pack, or a food or beverage item that was frozen overnight. These will thaw by lunchtime. If serving hot foods, warm up the thermos with boiling water for a few minutes. Reheat your food and add to your emptied thermos. This will help keep the food hot until lunch time.

For more information, visit Eat Right Ontario for Quick and Easy Lunch Ideas.
Peanut free lunches
  • Most schools in Ottawa require peanut free lunches. Check with your school to see if you should avoid packing peanut butter or foods containing peanuts in your child's lunch.

  • Even without peanuts, your child can get protein in their lunch.

  • Protein is primarily found in Meat and Alternatives and Milk and Alternatives food groups.

  • Smaller amounts are found in the Grain Products and Vegetables and Fruit food groups.

What you need to know about food labels
Food labels are important. If your child has a food allergy, be sure to read the labels on all pre-packaged food. The Ingredient List and the Nutrition Facts Table provide information about the food you are eating.
The Ingredient List and the Nutrition Facts Table will help you:
  • Choose healthy food more easily

  • Compare two products to make better food choices for you and your family

  • Learn about the nutrition information of the foods you eat

  •  Better manage special diets

  • Increase or decrease your intake of a nutrient

For more information on Nutrition Facts Tables please visit Health Canada. Be sure to check out our Healthy Snacks for Active Kids content:

This is the 24th year of the GLAD Cleaning the Capital campaign. The annual cleanup campaign first began in 1994 as a springtime cleanup. As a result, an estimated 930,000 kilograms of waste has been removed from our public spaces.
