Two-part Friendly Forum: Meet Beacon Press author Nancy Abrams:   Sunday, September 24 , part 1 at  10:40 a.m.  (sanctuary) & part 2 at  12:40 - 2:00 p.m.  (room 113/115). An atheist married to a famous scientist (cosmologist Joel Primack), published the book  A God That Could Be Real: Spirituality, Science, and the Future of Our Planet  in 2015: "She dismantles several common assumptions about God (omniscient, omnipotent) as incompatible with science-but finds something worthy of the name 'God' (not universal, but planetary) in the new science of emergence. Join us for a discussion of how we humans might be inspired to protect our warming planet and create a sustainable civilization." Rev. The UUCF Buddhist Fellowship has scheduled an extra meeting on Sunday, Sept. 24.  The session will focus on several different approaches to meditation with time to practice them. Beginners are especially invited.  Lynn Wagner will facilitate.

Learn How to Irish Set Dance: Monday, October 2, 6:30 p.m. (Chapel). You've thought about coming to the ceilí but not sure if you can do it? We are offering (3) hour and a half sessions prior to Oct 8th where we will take you through the basics of Irish Set Dancing. You'll learn how the dances are organized, what the calls mean and how to perform them. We'll even go through several figures so you get the feel of the dancing. You do not need a partner.

Wills & Trusts Teach-in: Thursday, October 5, 1:00 p.m. Room 113/115. Do you have a will?  Is it up to date? This seminar is your chance to hear an attorney share important information about Wills and Trusts: 
Why have a will, and how often should it be updated?

What is important in creating Health Care Directives? 
How can you provide for a dependent with special needs?

Our 2nd Annual Irish Ceilí is coming up! It will be held on Sunday, October 8. Beginners class starts at 3 p.m.. First Ceili dance from 4-5. Potluck dinner from 5-6. And then second dance from 6-8. Climate Justice Peaceful Protests: Saturday, September 23, Fireside Room, Wegman's, 7830 Worman's Mill Rd. Wells Fargo Bank is financing the Keystone XL pipeline, ignoring the global warming impacts of exploiting the fossil fuel. 'Trumpcare' Has Returned: Special request from UU Social Justice: Tuesday, September 25, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Senate Drop-in. The Graham-Cassidy bill again puts millions at risk of losing their healthcare. Most analysts say this proposal is worse than the BRCA, the bill that was defeated in July.  This UUSJ webpage has more information on what you can do. Please take a look, share the page widely, and do your own research about this insidious bill.

Peace Vigil Holding the Vision of a World Without Nuclear Weapons: Sunday, September 24, 2:00 p.m. on the steps of the Evangelical Reformed United Church of Christ, 15 West Church Street, Frederick, followed by a Multi-Faith Musical Celebration for Peace at 3:00 pm.

October's Split-plate Recipient is the UU - United Nations Office (UU-UNO), which has two missions:
1. To engage in the work the UN to advance a peaceful, just, sustainable and pluralistic world community that promotes human rights.

 2. To educate and inspire UUs and others to support and participate in this work.
This small nongovernmental organization is an effective advocate for our principles on the world stage.  Please support the UU - UNO through the split plate on United Nations Sunday, October 15.

Community News

Call for Help: The Frederick Community Action Agency Soup Kitchen needs volunteers.  The Frederick Soup Kitchen, operated by the Frederick Community Action Agency (FCAA), is desperately in need of volunteers to staff the soup kitchen and serve food to homeless individuals and needy families. The Frederick Soup Kitchen serves a free evening meal, seven (7) days a week to as many as 110 hungry people a night. The Frederick Soup Kitchen served over 25,000 meals during fiscal year 2017.
 
Volunteers are needed Monday through Friday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. to serve prepared meals and then clean up. It is an enjoyable and rewarding volunteer activity that does not require any special skills. Volunteers must be at least 14 years of age and volunteers are especially needed on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday evenings. Most volunteers serve meals 2 to 4 evenings per month.

Multifaith Musical Celebration for Peace: Sunday, September 24th at 3:00 pm at Evangelical Reformed United Church of Christ, 15 West Church Street, Frederick, MD faith communities and singers from Hood College will join together in a musical celebration for peace. Groups participating in this event see this concert as an opportunity to build unity and community through music. Given as a gift to our community, music heals wounds and brings peace and inspiration to our hearts. With competing voices and ideas seeming to divide us, this peaceful gathering offers fellowship and oneness for all.

The event features choirs and musicians from Hood College and the following faith communities: Trinity United Methodist, Islamic Society of Frederick, Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Frederick, Metropolitan DC Baha'i , All Saints Episcopal Church, Evangelical Reformed United Church of Christ, and Beth Sholom.

Let it Shine Extravaganza: Saturday,  October, 14, 7:00 p.m. St. John's Regional Catholic School, 8428 Oppossumtown Pike, Frederick 21702
Adults with and without disabilities are the featured performers in this Variety Show, the proceeds of which will benefit L'Arche Frederick, whose mission is to build a community of faith-filled homes for people with intellectual disabilities.  Singing, dancing, magic and skits are planned for the show, which begins at 7PM. Doors open at 6:30PM for sale of handmade goods and bidding in the silent auction.  Suggested donation of $10 for adults and $3 for children over 6.  Come join the fun!
