Duke Energy Provides Scholarships for Veterans

Duke Energy presents check at Tropicana Field
The Duke Energy Foundation has awarded the St. Petersburg College Foundation $7,500 for its Veterans Bridge Fund initiative.

Duke, through its "Victories for Veterans" program and in partnership with the Tampa Bay Rays, is awarding over $90,000 to veteran-related charities in Pinellas and Pasco counties. The funding represents $1,000 for every Rays win this season.

"Serving our communities is an integral part of Duke Energy's culture and we are especially honored to help support our veterans through employee volunteer events, by actively hiring veterans -- we employ nearly 2,000 veterans at Duke Energy -- and through initiatives like this," said Alex Glenn, State President of Duke Energy -- Florida. "The organizations that are benefiting from the 'Victories for Veterans' program offer invaluable services to local veterans and we are proud to invest in them."

Student veterans, including SPC's Student Veteran Association President Brittany Achor attended the Rays' last home game to accept the check and thank Duke Energy.
Suncoast Credit Union Sponsors All College Day

St. Petersburg College welcomed Suncoast Credit Union as the lead sponsor of this year's All College Day. In his opening comments, President Law thanked Suncoast for their involvement and support and encouraged attendees to stop by the Suncoast Credit Union mobile unit located on the west lawn. All College Day is an annual college-wide professional and personal development day. This year, the event offered more than 170 sessions covering a range of topics from technology and leadership skills to retirement planning and health maintenance. Suncoast Credit Union facilitated two informative sessions entitled "Ten Steps to Financial Success".

Student Spotlight

Zamarie Johnson exhibits the leadership skills that inspire others to be their best.

Zamarie plans to graduate from SPC this spring with an A. A. degree and transfer to the University of Florida to pursue a B. A. in Business Administration. In the meantime, he is helping to launch a new peer mentoring program at SPC and is involved with the Men Achieving Excellence program, a support group for male students of color.

Outside of SPC, Zamarie is helping students across South St. Petersburg as the President of the newly formed Southside St. Petersburg Community PTA. The community-wide PTA hopes to generate involvement and support for schools in southern Pinellas.

Zamarie credits SPC with providing him with many experiences and opportunities including his internship at the St. Petersburg Mayor's Office. His leadership has not gone unnoticed: Academy Prep of St. Petersburg recently presented Zamarie with the Ben Fisher Alumni Mentoring Award. This prestigious award recognizes Johnson's mentorship of Academy Prep students.
