CIFS-IPP Gold-level Member Meeting

On August 22nd, executives from CIFS-IPP Gold-level Member companies gathered at The Treman Center in Newfield, New York to discuss their aspirations for the program. CIFS-IPP recently celebrated its third anniversary, and this interactive session with Gold-level Members was organized to craft a path toward the program's next chapter of success. We are also taking stock of the program with Silver-level Members and faculty and plan to roll out some ideas about the future state of the program later this fall. Stay tuned.

Neil Mattson awarded INFEWS grant

We are excited to announce that CIFS Faculty Fellow Neil Mattson, Associate Professor in the Horticulture Section of the School of Integrative Plant Science, was recently awarded an Innovations at the Nexus of Food, Energy, and Water Systems (INFEWS) grant from a partnership between the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute for Food and Agriculture (NIFA).  The overarching goal of INFEWS is to catalyze integrated, interdisciplinary research efforts to transform scientific understanding of the food, energy and water (FEW) nexus in order to improve system function and management, address system stress, increase resilience, and ensure sustainability.  Learn more about the project entitled Strategic FEW and Workforce Investments to Enhance Viability of Controlled Environment Agriculture in Metropolitan Areas here

Jack'd Jerky wins IFT & Mars Competition in Las Vegas, NV
A team consisting of Cornell Food Science students took the top prize at the Institute of Food Technologists' Student Association & Mars Product
Development competition this summer. Co-captains Jessica Kwong '18 and Brandon Yep '17 worked with Isabel Alster '19, Halle Bershad '17, Will Borchert '17, Alexa Capano '17, Molly Mandel '17, Micah Martin, M.S. '17, Kaitlin Steinleitner '19 and Anna Xu '17 to create Jack'd Jerky. The jerky is made from jackfruit. "It's a refreshing reprieve from the salt- and sugar-laden meat jerky currently on the market. "Jack'd Jerky will appeal to health-conscious millennials who are seeki ng new, novel products." You can read here about the tough competition they faced and here about other Cornell winners.

Cornell Tech Opens on Roosevelt Island
With luminaries and Cornell power players aplenty, and pomp-and-circumstance befitting such a historic occasion, Cornell officially strengthened its already sizable New York City presence Sept. 13 with the dedication of the glittering, futuristic Cornell Tech campus on Roosevelt Island. Less than six years after winning then-New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg's contest to submit plans for an applied sciences and engineering campus, Cornell Tech is up and running. The winning proposal that spawned Cornell Tech was a joint submission, Cornell partnering with the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology. Read more here.

Onstage for the ribbon-cutting officially dedicating the Cornell Tech campus Sept. 13 are, from left, Cornell Tech student Evan Kesten, M.S. '18, Verizon Communications Chairman and CEO Lowell McAdam, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, Cornell President Martha E. Pollack, philanthropist and former NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Technion President Peretz Lavie, Cornell Board of Trustees Chairman Robert Harrison, Dean and Vice Provost Dan Huttenlocher, and Cornell Tech student Jillian Sue, M.S. '18.

Cornell Tech focuses on creating pioneering leaders and technologies for the digital age, through research, technology commercialization, and graduate-level education at the professional masters, doctoral and postdoctoral levels.
Our premise is that the rapid pace of innovation in the digital age calls for new approaches to commercializing university technology, new levels of strategic collaboration between companies and universities, and new curricula for graduate education. We are creating new academic programs that blend technical depth, business knowhow, design skills and a "builder" mindset.

Thank you for taking the time to catch up on our latest news. There is always something exciting happening here on campus. Contact us today to schedule your visit!
