Cambridge Art Students Donate Time and Talent
Hopewell Media Center
The Hopewell Middle School Media Center got a facelift this summer thanks to some Cambridge High School art students.  A group of talented students donated many hours painting columns to resemble book spines.  Among the artists were Becca Waldorf, Nicole Harris, C J Manabat, Kelli Gargan, Amy Laik, and Maanasa Javangula.  Most of them are Hopewell alumni who have now left their mark for future Mustangs to enjoy.  Returning students and teachers love the new look.  The Media Center still has a few columns left to paint, so interested artists should contact Ms. Whitney Beem ( [email protected]) at Hopewell.

Can my 14 and 16 year old stay home alone overnight?
Guidelines about supervision
Each year, the school is informed about minors staying home alone overnight.  Below are the guidelines provided by Child Protective Services for the amount of time and ages children may be left unsupervised or supervised by a child under 18 years old.

1.    Children eight (8) years and under should never be left alone.

2.  Children between the ages of nine (9) and twelve (12) may be left alone for brief periods of time (less than two (2) hours) when the child is determined to be mature by the caretaker.  Children between 9 and 12 years old may not supervise other children or younger siblings.

3.  Children ages thirteen (13) and older may be left alone and may perform the role of babysitter as authorized by the parent/caretaker.  It is advisable to limit this time to twelve (12) hours or less and only when the child is determined to be mature by the caretaker.  Minor children may not be left alone overnight.  It is also suggested that those children over the age of thirteen (13) caring for others should have participated in a course on babysitting.

4.  Older children with special conditions or disabilities should not be left home alone.

All children should know:

1.  The family emergency plan.  (Fire escapes, 911, etc.)

2.  How to demonstrate the emergency plan.

3.  Where the parent's phone numbers are for work and home, their home address, and how to give directions to emergency personnel.

4.  Support systems in place, in case a parent cannot be reached.  (Relatives or neighbors available.)

5.  Whom to contact if there are language or cultural factors affecting the situation.

As much as they may complain about it, minor children-even youth must have an adult monitoring their care while their parents are away.  If you have any further questions, please contact Stephanie Schuette, the School Social Worker at this school.
PSAT Registration
New Registration Requirements
The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test is a great tool for students considering college. The PSAT/NMSQT measures critical reading skills, math problem-solving skills, and writing skills. Cambridge High School recommends that students take the PSAT/NMSQT in order to receive feedback about strengths and weaknesses, enter the competition for National Merit Scholar scholarships (11th graders) and to help prepare for the SAT.

For the 2017 PSAT/NMSQT, students at Cambridge High School will be registering online. This registration will take a few minutes and can be completed from any computer with internet access.

Online Exam registration timeline:
·  Begins-Tuesday, September 5, 2017, at 8:00 am
·  End-Friday, September 29, 2017, at 3:30 pm

To register , students should follow this link: www.TotalRegistration.net/PSAT/112129 .

To complete registration :
·  Students must answer all of the required questions
·  Print two copies of the confirmation page (.pdf) that is provided at the end
·  Submit one copy of the confirmation to Ms. Phairr in counseling suite as verification of registration for the PSAT.

Please contact Ms. Phairr at [email protected] , if you have questions or require assistance.

SAT Day
October 11, 2017
For the 2017-2018, Cambridge will be offering to the Class of 2018, the SAT Day on October 11, 2017.  This administration is different from the regular SAT administration in that it is given on a school day and it does NOT include the essay portion of the exam.

A few points to consider:
·  SAT School Day in October is for students classified as seniors only.
·  SAT School Day is free to students.
·  SAT School Day is available to any senior.
·  Khan Academy has free SAT prep aligned to student PSAT tests. College Board is seeing 200 point gains in students dedicated to practicing using Khan.

This offer is good for the first 200 students and it is on a first come, first served basis.  If you're interested in taking SAT Day, please sign up here: https://goo.gl/forms/3IizrbELlxI7pRxg2  .  The registration link will be live until September 29, 2017 at 3:30 p.m. or until the 200 spaces have been filled.  If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Phairr at [email protected] .

Attendance Myths
Research-based from the Department of Education
Does it really matter if my child misses a few extra days each year?  Here is one of the myths about student attendance.
Missing a few days of school each year is normal and doesn't matter that much.
    • Data indicate that missing more than five days of school each year, regardless of the cause, impacts student academic performance and starts shaping attitudes about school.
    • From the 6th grade through the 9th grade, student attendance is a better predictor of dropping out than standardized test scores.
    • Excused absences and unexcused absences have the similar impact on student academic performance.
Thank you for helping to prioritize daily school attendance.
