The National Museum of the Marine Corps presents a discussion of the Marine Corps during the Great War using replica uniforms and artifacts. Find out how Marines earned the nickname Devil Dogs, and learn the significance of the Battle of Belleau Wood.

Voices of the Past: Letters from the Front and from Home
Fredericksburg Branch, Tuesday, October 3, 7:00-8:30  p.m.
Using actual letters and diary entries, local actors will give voice to Americans who went to war-some from our area-and their loved ones left behind on the home front. Accompanied by music and photos, these first-person accounts, whether poignant or funny, will inspire and entertain.

The Great War from the Margins: WWI Literature by Women and African Americans

Dr. Mara Scanlon, Professor of English, UMW, leads a discussion of less traditional WWI literature, including pieces from the Library of America online reader World War I and America.

Museum of Valor Exhibit
Fredericksburg Branch, Friday-Saturday, November 10-11, 9:00 a.m.-5:30  p.m.
The Museum of Valor presents an exhibit to commemorate the entry of the United States into World War I. Included will be a display of medical devices and equipment.

When Fiction Goes to War: Creating Characters In and After Combat

Porter Branch, Saturday, November 11, 9:45-10:45 a.m.

Steve Watkins, award-winning local author and former instructor of journalism, creative writing, and Vietnam War literature at the University of Mary Washington, will lead this workshop for veterans, their family members, and anyone who is interested in writing about the war experience.
