Siena Scribe

In This Issue

Dear Parents,

Today's Siena Scribe is very short and does not have a spiritual reflection because you will be receiving a letter from me along with your children's first quarter report cards tomorrow.  I have reviewed every student's report card and I am happy to report that I see many report cards that show excellent achievements and outstanding efforts.  Thank you for supporting your children so well.  Our teachers look forward to meeting with you at our parent-teacher conferences next week.

In last week's Siena Scribe, I shared with you a recent professional development opportunity during which our teachers and staff examined our school mission and reflected on ways to embrace and live our school mission daily, in big and small ways.    As part of our efforts to live our mission fully, we invite you to take a few moments to complete a survey that will help us to get a sense of how well you see our mission being lived out.  The link to the survey is: https://goo.gl/forms/GEnBOOco7HaL5Iqz1

Gratefully in Christ,
Sister Mary Jacinta, O.P.
Principal

Notes from the Nurse:

The Im portance of Hand Washing
Does i
t se
em as if your child is sick all the time? In the early school years, your child's immune system is put to the test. After
all, young children in large groups are breeding grounds for the organisms that cause illness.  Fortunately, we can teach our children healthy habits that help them keep free from illness.

Many childhood illnesses are caused by viruses. All it takes is a single child to bring a virus to school for the spread to begin. Consider this common scenario; a child who has a cold coughs or sneezes in the classroom. The children sitting nearby inhale the infected respiratory droplets and the cold spreads. Or perhaps a child who has a stomach virus uses the toilet and returns to the classroom without washing his or her hands. Illness-causing germs might spread from anything the sick child touches to other children who touch the same object and then put their fingers in their mouths.

This is why hand-washing counts!
Frequent hand-washing is one of the simplest, and most effective, ways to stay healthy in school. Remind your child to wash his or her hands before eating and after using the toilet, blowing his or her nose, or playing outside. Children should soap their hands for as long as it takes to sing the "Happy Birthday" song two times, or roughly 20 seconds.

Over the next week, our teachers will be reviewing proper hand-washing technique with their classes.  Please reinforce this at home as well.  We are hopeful that by focusing on hand-washing, we can be proactive in fighting illness in our school during the winter months to come.

Thank you and God bless you!
