• Remove the employer mandate
• Eliminate tax subsidies that make premiums affordable
• Eliminate Medicaid expansion
• Drop federal protections for individuals with pre-existing conditions
• No longer require essential services be automatically covered

The Texas State Board of Social Worker Examiners has received authorization from the Governor to create a temporary registration process for social workers with active licenses in good standing from other U.S. states to provide services in connection to the Hurricane Harvey relief efforts.

We are proud to announce the full list of NASW PACE endorsed candidates for public office in New Jersey.  Phil Murphy, the Democratic front-runner is an ally that will usher in much needed reforms. His Running Mate,  Sheila Oliver, is a social worker and ally of NASW-NJ! The campaign promises reforms to drug policy, promoting fair economic policies for all, supporting women's rights, and more. We are confident that Murphy and  Oliver will usher in a new era of politics friendly to social workers, the clients we serve, and the state we love.

As social workers, we know that anything that threatens the well-being and livelihood of our communities becomes an issue that impacts our profession and our country. As our NASW Code of Ethics indicates, the primary mission of our profession is to enhance the human well-being of all people, help meet basic needs and empower individuals. When we entered this profession, we did so under an obligation to uphold a core set of values of service, social justice, dignity and worth of the person, importance of human relationships, and integrity which are the foundation our code of ethics is built on.

Protecting dreamers and providing them with the opportunities they have earned is more than an immigration issue. It's a human issue, a health and mental health issue. Since the election, direct care providers have seen a rise in anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. Together, there is much we can do to fight this important battle.

NASW-NJ Member Recognized for Work in Pet Bereavement

Susan Stone, a licensed clinical social worker in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, who has worked to implement animal assisted therapy in hospitals, also facilitates an Animal Hospital Pet Bereavement Group. She runs a website, www.petlosshelp.org, and blog about pet bereavement. Her most recent dog, Seanny, 11, died in May. "I do not want to see an animal suffer," Stone said. "But that is a very subjective position. There are some very good tools to help injured and sick humans when they can no longer do the things they enjoy. For animals, there is only now. And sometimes we project our quality of life on them, and it may not be quality of life for them."

On October 2 - 3, join the  National Association of Social Workers  and the  National Council for Behavioral Health  for Hill Day 2017 in Washington, D.C.  

 

Hill Day is an opportunity for hundreds of behavioral health providers, consumers, family members, board members, administrators and community stakeholders to advocate for better resources for mental health and addiction treatment across the country.

 

Registration for Hill Day is free and includes access to policy sessions, workshops and keynote speakers on Monday, October 2. Visits to elected officials on Capitol Hill will take place on Tuesday, October 3.

With 20 national partners, Hill Day is the largest behavioral health advocacy event of the year.
