Issue #2/17                                                                                                                      September 21,  2017
Principal's Point

Dear SVA Families,

It is hard to believe that we have almost been in school for 6 weeks!  Time sure does fly when we are having fun.  We had an amazing International Dot Day celebration and PTSA movie night last Friday.  We are hoping to do another movie night in the Spring because it was a huge success.

Next Friday, mid-terms reports will go home with all students in grades 4-8.  Please review the midterm with your child and if you have any questions, please contact your child's teacher.  It is important for you and your child to be checking Infinite Campus weekly to stay informed about grades and assessments.

Save the date!  October 4th SVA will be partnering with the PTSA to celebrate Kentucky Kids Day! Our theme will be SVA Kids are Heroes and all students and staff will be encouraged to wear super hero attire that day to school.  We look forward to an amazing celebration of our students.

     Attendance Incentives

SVA needs your help! In an effort to increase attendance school-wide, we will now be offering incentives for those students/classes that have perfect attendance for each month. Students with perfect attendance (no absences/tardies) will be entered into a drawing each month for a prize. In addition, we will also be offering classroom rewards for those who achieve high attendance for the month in the form of a drawing as well. We are looking for donations for monthly prizes (i.e. itunes card, walmart card, restaurant gift card, etc...). Lastly, you may also choose to donate donuts, pizza, drinks, or some other treat for a classroom reward. If you would like to help out, please contact Mrs. Madden (7th/8th grade counselor) at
[email protected]   to make a donation. Thank you for all your encouragement and support!

Transportation

Bus Riders   -  If there is a question on the status of a particular bus, parents and guardians can access our new app, My Bus Buddie, which will display the  current status and location of that bus . The School District is providing a mobile app which can be accessed via a smart phone, laptop, or home PC (as long as the device has Internet connectivity and can access the Web). Should the transportation department wish to inform users of a significant delay for a bus or all buses, this app can show the anticipated delay time, i.e. one hour delay due to weather.  Click the link below to find out how to sign up for this app!

Car Riders  - New numbers for car riders are assigned each school year.  If you have a number from last year, please discard the old tag and request a new car rider number from the office for this school year.  Our tags this year are silver, instead of the yellow ones we used last year.  Also, for students in the YMCA/21st Century after/before school program, the numbers the YMCA uses are different than the school, so you will need both if you are have a student participating in that program.

Student Phones

During the school day, cell phones should only be used for educational purposes (grades 6-8 can use phones for games during activity time).  Students should not be texting their parents or other students during the school day.  If students are doing this, loss of phone privileges will occur.

Royal Rockstars & Role-Models Program
(replacing the Work Ethic Program)

Staring this year, every student at SVA will be exposed to five
ROYAL Habits:  R esilient Leader,  O pen Communicator, Creative Visionar Y A ctive Learner, and  L ifelong Innovator. The students have already learned about each Habit by discussion and viewing SVA's new murals that are located in the common hallways.  Look for more information to be coming home soon.

Confidence Project
for 6th Grade Girls

Starting this week, all 6th grade girls will be participating in 1 of 4 sessions called the Confidence Project. The goal of this session will be to help girls self identify her strengths, her unique ability to solve problems, and her core power. Guidance Counselor, Rachel Mercer will be working with Master Misty Elder from Legacy Taekwondo to help girls identify the best in themselves.

Starting in October, we will be extending the Confidence Project to an after school club.  We will meet twice a month, and all girls in 5th to 8th grade are invited.   If you are interested in signing your daughter up, please contact Rachel Mercer at [email protected]

K-5 Enrichment Schedule

Classes in grades K-5 participate in enrichment classes (P.E., Computer Lab, Art, Music, STEAM Lab) using an A-E rotation schedule.  Using this type of schedule ensures students receive equal instructional time in all enrichment classes.  Enrichment classes will not be on a specific day of the week.  They will be changing throughout the school year when school is not in session.

International Dot Day - A Huge Success!

On Friday, September 15 th , all SVA students participated in International Dot Day as part of their activities for Creative VisionarY week. Dot Day celebrated the creativity, individuality, and collaboration of the characters in the book  The Dot  by Peter Reynolds. In practicing this habit, each student created their own portion of a dot to be added to the whole school mural that will be displayed outside each of the STEAM labs. Each grade level was also asked to wear different colors to create their own grade level dot and their picture was taken to be added to the hallway display. Students did a great job in participating in this event and the creativity they have displayed in their dots is amazing! We definitely displayed the ROYAL Habit of Creative Visionary by being imaginative, open minded and a dreamer last week!
This week's ROYAL Habit is Active Learner. Another schoolwide display will be created as students work on being curious, engaged, and driven as Active Learners. Please check out the pictures from the day.

Be ROYAL - Create Visionary!

SBDM - Site Based Decision Making Council
Minority Parent Election

The school's Site Based Decision Making council, (SBDM) consists of 3 teachers, 2-3 parents and 1 principal.  SBDM has the responsibility to set school policy and make decisions outlined in statue, which should provide a safe environment to enhance student achievement.  Terms of office are for one-two years and the time commitment includes one monthly meeting during the school year, some special meetings, and a training, (usually during the summer).  Each year, our school parents/guardians elect parent/guardian members to join the SBDM council.
Summit View Academy has more than 8% student minority population and is seeking a minority parent/guardian to join SVA SBDM.
Qualifications:   Minority is defined as "American Indian; Alaskan native; African-American; Hispanic, including persons of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, and Central- or South-American origins; Pacific Islander; or other ethnic group underrepresented in the school" according to the SBDM statute [KRS 160.345(1)(a)].
A parent council member shall be a parent, step parent, foster parent or legal guardian of a student attending the school during the council member's term of office. A parent is ineligible if he/she is an employee or a relative of an employee (father, mother, brother, sister, husband, wife, son, daughter, aunt, uncle, son-in-law, daughter-in-law) of that school or for the district central office, or a local school board member or the spouse of a school board member.
Please e-mail our SVA PTSA President, Jill Sluder,  [email protected] , if you are interested in serving as a minority parent/guardian on SVA's SBDM Council.
Summit View Academy is a School-wide
Title I School  . . . What does this mean?

This program provides financial assistance through state educational agencies (SEAs) to local educational agencies (LEAs) and public schools with high numbers or percentages of low-income children to help ensure that all children meet challenging state academic content and student academic achievement standards.
LEAs target the Title I funds they receive to public schools with the highest percentages of children from low-income families. Unless a participating school is operating a schoolwide program, the school must focus Title I services on children who are failing, or most at risk of failing, to meet state academic standards. Schools enrolling at least 40 percent of children from low-income families are eligible to use Title I funds for schoolwide programs designed to upgrade their entire educational programs to improve achievement for all students, particularly the lowest-achieving students.

In school year 2009-10, more than 56,000 public schools across the country used Title I funds to provide additional academic support and learning opportunities to help low-achieving children master challenging curricula and meet state standards in core academic subjects. For example, funds support extra instruction in reading and mathematics, as well as special preschool, after-school, and summer programs to extend and reinforce the regular school curriculum.  That same year, Title I served more than 21 million children. Of these students, approximately 59 percent were in kindergarten through fifth grade, 21 percent in grades 6-8, 17 percent in grades 9-12, 3 percent in preschool, and less than 1 percent ungraded.

Title I is designed to help students served by the program to achieve proficiency on challenging state academic achievement standards. Title I schools with percentages of low-income students of at least 40 percent may use Title I funds, along with other federal, state, and local funds, to operate a "schoolwide program" to upgrade the instructional program for the whole school.  Schoolwide programs must use instructional strategies based on scientifically based research and implement parental involvement activities.
