WELCOME NEW MAJLIS MEMBERS
 
This past weekend, the Shura Council held its Majlis elections. There are nine majlis members each elected for a three year term. Each year, three seats become open on a rotating schedule and each member can serve two successive terms before a mandatory year off.

This year the General Body elected: Sis. Duaa Alwan of MAS GLA, Br. Owaiz Dadabhoy of Uplift Charity and re-elected Dr. Ahmed Soboh of Chino Valley Islamic Center (for his second three-year term). We thank these outgoing members for their service, Br. Hafez Hafez of CAIR-LA, Br. Rafael Delgado of LALMA.

This year we will hear from Social Justice Advocates, Law Enforcement Representatives and Former Inmates.

The Shura Council sends its deepest condolences to Dr. Ingrid Mattson on the death or her daughter, Soumayya Aatek, who returned to her creator this past week. Please keep her and her family in your prayers. A fund has been set up in Soumayya's name to build a well in Niger. Please contribute here. Since this fund is set up in Canada, your donations will be converted from USD to CAD at the current rate.

Next Tuesday, November 8th is Election Day. Learn about local candidates and propositions here.

The Shura Council urges youth, ages 18 - 40 to sign up for our new youth leadership program, Young Inspirers (YI) This is a one-year fellowship program for young adults to learn from experienced professionals and give back to their communities. Click here to learn more and apply.

Shura Council's interfaith partner, Dr. Rev. Sarah Halverson-Cano, was recently named "Best Holy Person 2016" by OC Weekly. Our Chairman, Dr. Muzammil Siddiqi, received the same recognition in 2012.

SCMCO has announced the results and pictures from its recent futsal tournament. We congratulate the organizers and all of the participants. 

Last week, LAPD sent a letter to the local Muslim community on the arrest and subsequent bail release of Mark Feigin.

"This is slavery" U.S. Inmate strike; biggest in U.S. History. Save the date, Sat. Dec. 3rd for " From the Back of the Bus to the Front of the Prison" with guest speakers Prof. Michelle Alexander and Dr. Maha Hilal.

Southern Poverty Law Center has released a field guide on countering prominent Anti-Muslim extremists.
