A Note from the Principal...

Hello Maize Elementary Family! Although the weather doesn't tell it's early November, the activities in the building certainly do. THANK YOU to all of you who organized, contributed to, and/or attended your student's Fall party last Friday. The kids had an absolute blast, and although I was out of the building that day, I have heard this year's costumes were outstanding! Thank you for supporting our students having fun together and building positive memories of their time with friends and staff at MES.

I know student placement has been on the minds of a lot of people and that there may still be questions about the recently adopted policy and the proposed district boundaries map. If you have questions, I want to remind of a great opportunity to get answers. Our District Superintendent, Chad Higgins, will be holding question and answer sessions tonight at Maize South High School at 6:30, and again tomorrow night at Maize High School at 6:30. Mr. Higgins will be sharing the same information at both meetings, so there isn't reason to attend both meetings unless you would like to. I am happy to address your questions as well, but I highly encourage you to attend one of these two meetings to hear from Mr. Higgins. I appreciate his leadership through this process.

Chess Club begins Friday!! All MES fourth and fifth grade students are invited to attend on the scheduled Fridays from 7:30AM-8:35AM (the bell). Mr. Ramey and I will be facilitating not only the playing of chess, but the fun learning associated with Chess Club. This is our third year to offer this opportunity. We have average around 80 students at each meeting for the last two years! If your student is interested in attending, all they have to do is return the permission slip they received last week. It needs to have you signature on it so I know you are aware of the schedule. Drop your student off at the FRONT DOORS at 7:30 on the scheduled Fridays (do NOT drop them off on the north side of the building. This has created issues with student safety in the past). Chess Club is FREE. I have over 50 students can use, but they are welcome to bring their own as long as they understand they are responsible for them. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Just in time for Holiday shopping...The cookie dough fundraiser is returning again this year! This year's proceeds will go toward our staff being trained in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. You may have heard your students talking about the 7 Habits lately and that is because our staff is sharing that with students this year. We are doing the best we can to convey that information to our students without having been officially trained. Thank you in advance for anything you can do to help us raise funds to bring this very effective and worthwhile training to our staff. Our fundraiser will kickoff on November 9 and will run through Nove. 16. The cookie dough will be delivered prior to leaving for our Holiday Break in December.

There are many other exciting things happening at MES. Thank you for reading through our newsletter and for supporting our students. Have a great day!
IMPORTANT INFORMATION TO REMEMBER
Our school day starts at 8:45 am every day.  Students who arrive after 8:50 am will be counted tardy.  Students are allowed to enter the building at 8:35 am.  If you need to drop your student off before this time, the YMCA has a latchkey program at MES.  For more information please call the YMCA at 316-264-1610.

The district dismisses students 40 minutes early every Wednesday to accommodate the Professional Learning Communities (PLCs).  The teachers participate in the PLC to discuss curriculum, instructional strategies, data review, technology training, etc.  School is dismissed at 3:20 pm every Wednesday.  Morning Kindergarten is dismissed at 11:35 am and afternoon Kindergarten begins at 12:40 pm every Wednesday.

Please call the office at 316-722-8230 if your child is going to be absent or if you have a transportation change.  For student safety, please let the office know of a transportation change before 3:30 pm and 3:00 pm on Wednesdays.

If your student is riding a different bus home with a friend, a note is required from both sets of parents.  These can be given to the office for Mr. White to sign and can then be given to the bus driver.

DON'T FORGET LUNCH MONEY!
USD 266 uses the Skyward Food Service and RevTrak fee payment systems. Please check your email and phone numbers in Skyward, so you may be alerted when your child only has 2 lunches left. Parents receive an email when your child has $5.00 left in their account. Parents receive a 2nd email after your child has 1 lunch left. When your child doesn't have any money into the account-we have your child go to the office and call you. Please put money into the account that day. You will also receive a 3rd email when your child has a zero balance.

Please check with your child if they are eating breakfast at school or getting a 2nd milk-the charges add up quickly. If you have more than one child, please check both lunch accounts. We are not allowed to go into one child's account to pay for a sibling.

Parents may keep as large a balance as they wish in a child's account (for example: $5.00, $10.00, $15.00 or more). If the student doesn't have enough in his/her lunch account to cover a meal, the account will be charged for a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and milk if the student chooses to take one. No meal charges will be allowed.
If you have any questions regarding Skyward and the RevTrak system, please call our school office. We want every child to have a good lunch, every day!

LIBRARY NEWS
September Million Minutes added up to 149,896! Way to read! October Million Minutes are due November 1st.   We are charting each grade and the fourth grade class is in the lead with 30,181 minutes! Keep recording outside reading and hopefully we will see Mr. White duct taped to the MES wall!

HUDDLE UP
I hope you are all doing well. Students have done a great job during the first 9 weeks of school! Coming up in November, kindergartners will be learning about healthy habits. The first and second graders will be learning an additional 4 bones of the body. Third through fifth grade will be learning additional muscles. We are moving into a speed stacking (cup stacking) unit and just finishing up some cooperative games. After that we will be doing some fitness kick boxing routines, and exercises with the Xbox Kinect. Remember to eat healthy and find ways to get a great workout during the winter cold!

FROM THE NURSE
BEING SICK WITH SEASONAL INFLUENZA IS MISERABLE

Studies show that 4.0% of students aged 5-11 have missed 11 or more days of school in the past 12 months due to illness. Remember a healthy student is better learner.  Nearly 22 million school days are lost each year due to colds alone and 38 million school days are lost each year due to the influenza virus (Infection Prevention eNews).  January is one of the peak "flu season" months. Cases of seasonal influenza are already being reported in Sedgwick County.  The peak of flu season is around the corner.  It is not too late to get vaccinated.   Respiratory illnesses, in addition to seasonal influenza, are common this time of year. Click  here for the differences between a cold and Influenza.  Remember to be vigilant about hand washing, coughing into your sleeve, and contacting your health care provider within 48 hours if signs of Influenza develop. Teach your child to keep his hands away from his face unless they are clean as respiratory and gastrointestinal germs enter the body through the eyes, nose and mouth. The Center for Disease Control  recommends that  people who are sick with flu-like symptoms should stay home for at least 24 hours after the fever is gone.  Fever should be gone without the use of a fever reducing medication. Help send the message to your children that school is important, but keep them home for fever, vomiting, diarrhea, and continuous coughing.

 FROM THE COUNSELOR

We had a great time celebrating Red Ribbon Week! We learned about respecting our bodies and making healthy choices for ourselves.

I loved all of the healthy selfies!

The winners of the drawing were:
Kindergarten: Nickolas Hawkins
1st grade: John Strobel
2nd grade: Kyah McCreary
3rd grade: Avery Morgan
4th grade: Peyton Weber
5th grade: Devin Short

We will be focusing on safety and responsibility for the month of November.

We are once again getting ready for our annual Caring Hearts Food Drive. Caring Hearts is an organization that assists USD 266 families that are experiencing various needs during the holiday season. The Caring Hearts food drive will be November 14-18. Please send canned, boxed, and nonperishable food items with your child to school, if you wish to do so. Thank you for your generosity!
