Weigh in on campus landscape design presentations from Manhattan students

The campus grounds could be receiving a new look courtesy of landscaping students from the Manhattan campus, and you could have input in the design!

Facilities is hosting the Planting Design Studio III class (LAR 410) on Nov. 9 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the College Center Conference Room to hear their ideas for three areas of the Polytechnic Campus.

During the past few weeks, the students have evaluated and developed designs associated with the campus main entrance, the south entrance and the open space area near the recreation fields.  The students have each focused on a specific area and developed a conceptual design which will address improving the aesthetics, sustainability and effective use/future development of our campus grounds.

Anyone is welcome to attend and listen to each presentation. Upon conclusion, facilities will solicit feedback from the audience on which design(s) they would like to see refined and ultimately implemented.
Polytechnic Campus to hold first 'Worldview Week'
Get cultured, Wildcats!

Kansas State Polytechnic will be hosting its first Worldview Week Nov. 7-11, as a five-day celebration of all things international.

The Worldview Week will contain such activities as an international foods tasting fair, a presentation by global aviation company Boeing during the Civic Luncheon Lecuture, in-class guest speakers, and indigenous handcrafted kits prepared by students and undergraduate services librarian, Katherine Jones.

Students also have planned a travel blog that aims to feature profiles of all Polytechnic international students, staff, and faculty. The photos to the right show students practicing their interviewing skills getting ready to create the vlog.

Seeking interview clothing donations for career closet

Kansas State Polytechnic Career Services are attempting to ramp up the career closet on campus.

For those unfamiliar with what that is, a career closet is simply business type clothing that students could borrow for interviewing and networking events. We are looking for suits, sport coats, ties, dresses, skirts, dress pants, shoes, scarves; anything that would be appropriate attire for an interview. Many of our students have not yet invested in business type clothing and it would be very helpful to them if they could instead borrow until they get out and start making money to buy that type of wardrobe.

If you have business clothes that you would like to donate, contact Julie Rowe at [email protected] to arrange a pickup, or you can deliver them to Julie's office in College Center 208.
Project management certification exam prep class

Wichita PMP Certified Professionals will help prepare you for either the CAPM or PMP Certification with the Velociteach PMP Certification Training Program.

PMP/CAPM certification is the gold standard of project management certification. The PMP/CAPM validates your competence to perform in the role of a project manager, leading, and directing projects and teams.

The course will be offered on November 5, 12, and 19 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Salina.

Aviation program expands learning fleet with four new Beechcraft Bonanza aircraft

The aviation program on the Polytechnic Campus is enhancing its students' flying experience with the addition of new aircraft to its fleet.

Kansas State Polytechnic has purchased a quartet of Beechcraft Bonanza G36 aircraft from longtime university partner Textron Aviation as part of its plan to continuously provide professional pilot majors with the most relevant and cutting-edge flight training possible. The new planes arrived intermittently throughout 2015 and 2016, with the final delivery occurring in mid-October. Kansas State Polytechnic's aviation program is now outfitted with 34 learning aircraft, all of which are Textron Aviation products.

Digital media students participate in annual pumpkin carving
Kansas State Polytechnic's digital media students are mixing modern technology with old school fun.

Just in time for Halloween, students in the  visual literacy class created their own pumpkin-carving pattern with the help of various computer programs they having been utilizing in class. Once designed, students took the patterns outside last week and carved a pumpkin to replicate their original idea.

Their professor, Dr. Genereux, has been having his class carve pumpkins for several years now because it is a great learning application for students.
Engineering technology students thrive at regional ACM competition

Kansas State Polytechnic's ACM club members now have a second place win under their belts.

Competing in the Association for Computing Machinery, or ACM, North Central North America  Regional Programming Contest on Oct. 29, six engineering technology students finished second at the Olathe-based competition and in the top 20 percent of their region.

The students broke off into two teams of three and were given five hours to solve as many programming problems as they could from a set of 12.  They must submit solutions as programs in C, C++,Java or Python[4][5]. Programs are then run on test data. If a program fails to give a correct answer, the team is notified and can submit another program.

Faculty adviser Troy Harding says  each team can use only one computer and "this makes the time pressure even greater. Good teamwork and ability to withstand pressure is needed to win."

Team members include Charles Bockhorn, Alec Cork, Ryan Fabac, Logan Gideon, Justin Noggle, and Benjamin Stich. The team of Fabac, Gideon and Noggle finished second.

A high-five is one of the most recognizable ways two people can share excitement or celebrate a job well done. Kansas State Polytechnic's CEO and Dean Verna Fitzsimmons awards her high-five each week to honor faculty, staff and students for their dedication to the university.

Congratulations to the ACM club members!
I would like to send a big high-five to Kansas State Polytechnic's ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) club members: Charles Bockhorn, Alec Cork, Ryan Fabac, Logan Gideon, Justin Noggle and Benjamin Stich.

Each of these members competed in the ACM North Central North America Regional Programming Contest on Oct. 29. More than 230 teams from universities and colleges in nine different states and Canada compete at 15 different sites. Our team of Fabac, Gideon and Noggle finished in second place at the Garmin site in Olathe.

Thank you for representing the Polytechnic Campus on the regional stage and for all of your efforts in practicing for the competition as well as during the heat of the battle. Congratulations on a job well done!

Also, thank you to the club's faculty adviser Troy Harding for being an enthusiastic leader for these young men.
Thank you to everyone who made Textron Day a successful event!
I would like to express my gratitude to everyone who helped make Textron Day a successful event. There were many moving pieces to make the day possible, like food services, facilities, professional education and outreach, marketing, advising, and many other faculty and staff members. It was important to make our aviation partner, Textron, feel welcome as well as provide students with a valuable networking opportunity, and you did just that.

I would also like to highlight Julie Rowe for spearheading the event - your dedication to student success is very evident, and I appreciate your hard work on Textron Day and every day.
