BIO:
Banu Gibson is a singer, a bandleader, musician, director, owns her own record label, and is Executive Director of the New Orleans Trad Jazz Camp for adults.
With her 6 piece jazz band in tow she has toured the world.
The highlights of Banu's career have been appearing on Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion, bringing in the millennium as the only guest artist of the Boston Pops, singing at the 2001 Playboy Jazz Festival at the Hollywood Bowl, and singing with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra at the Bowl. She has performed over 80 symphony pops concerts
She was honored in 2009 by the Preservation Resource Center for her contributions to music, was a New Orleans Magazine's 2007 Jazz All Star and is featured in the 2010 New Orleans Magazine as "Top Female Achiever" and is a Board Member of the AFM Local 174-496.
Why I Joined the Union: "I truly believe in strength in numbers. Artists tend to work as individuals, but need to stand together for their individual rights. The union isn't a "they" - the union is "us."

BIO: Which New Orleans union musician shares in common these diverse traits: 24 years as the pianist for the James Rivers Movement, Lead Department Chair for the Arts & Humanities Division at Delgado Community College, Clint Eastwood's film, "The Bridges of Madison County" (musician), Jazz Piano Instructor for the Louis Armstrong Summer Jazz Camp, the N.O. Saints Band, Musical Ambassador to the island of Aruba, member of the National WWII Museum's official musical groups- the Victory Big Band and the Victory Six and performing and recording with nearly every band and musician in New Orleans?

Why I Joined the Union: "The main reason I am in the Musicians Union is that I believe in fair working conditions for all of the cultural workers in New Orleans, fair play, and the development of human capital. I also believe that membership in our local helps us stand apart as serious, working professionals, with a standard of conduct, ethics and skill. I originally joined the union in 1990 to play with the New Orleans Saints Band, but found the values and work ethic that our Union stands for are applicable to all of my gigs, and other facets of my life. I am also proud to have served as an Executive Board member for the local, and am most proud with the job that we did in helping bring back music and musicians back to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, and am also proud at the job that we have done in advocating for the rights of all working musicians."
