During this time of Thanksgiving, let us remember to express gratitude for the gifts we've been given in our lives.

Take time to practice mindfulness - focusing on the present moment, releasing obsessive thoughts about the past or worries about the future.  Mindful meditation can help reduce anxiety and stress and help you cope better during the hustle-bustle of the season. (Helpful guided meditations prepared by Dr. Chiappino are available for purchase at www.healingboobies.com/meditation-bundle ).

Speaking of gratitude, we'd like to thank all our veterans for their service and sacrifices they've made for our country.

Wishing you and your family a wonderful Thanksgiving!

ADHD in Girls:
Addressing Focus, Anxiety & Oppositional Behavior Issues Naturally

Impulsivity, hyperactivity -- the hallmark signs of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) displayed in boys -- are not behaviors often expressed by girls with ADHD. Frequent daydreaming, disorganization and difficulty completing assignments are some of the subtle symptoms experienced by girls, which is why many times the disorder goes undiagnosed in females.

Girls with ADHD oftentimes struggle with not only focus and attention issues but also behavioral and conduct disorders, anxiety and/or depression.   In fact, a new study shows that girls with ADHD are more than five times as likely as neurotypical girls to have Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), a condition characterized by an ongoing pattern of irritability, anger or argumentative behavior.  Findings also revealed that girls with ADHD are three times more likely  to be depressed, and four times more likely to suffer from anxiety as compared to non-ADHD girls.

On the average, girls are diagnosed five years later than boys, a critical loss of time for getting the necessary academic accommodations that can help them to succeed in life. A missed or late diagnosis is concerning -- particularly as girls head into their teen years-- and can manifest into self-esteem issues, emotional problems, eating disorders and risky behaviors.

Neurofeedback training provides hope for those suffering from ADHD and its comorbid conditions. The initial step, a quantitative electroencephalogram, commonly known as a QEEG brain map, can help assess if your child has symptoms of ADHD, as well any apparent brain changes that are associated with depression, anxiety and ODD.   The "Q" provides a roadmap for neurofeedback brain-wave training.  Through a series of neurofeedback sessions, the brain learns to properly regulate abnormal brain-wave patterns that underlie these conditions, helping to overcome symptoms. No drugs or invasive procedures; simple brain training that helps achieve positive, long-lasting improvements.   Check out Dr. Chiappino's video above and then call to schedule your child's QEEG brain map.  $50 off this month.

High Blood Pressure in Midlife Linked to Alzheimer's Disease
Acupuncture/Chiropractic Can Keep Levels in Check

For years, the American Heart Association has issued warnings about the dangers of untreated high blood pressure and the risk of heart attack, stroke, congestive heart failure and organ damage.  Late last month, the organization added another devastating disorder to the list of those associated with elevated blood pressure: Alzheimer's Disease

Researchers have found that high blood pressure in middle age can lead to impaired cognition and is a potential risk factor for Alzheimer's,a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by progressive memory loss, language issues and the loss of social and intellectual skills.   The study, published in the AHA journal Hypertension, found that the structure of cerebral blood vessels is disrupted by elevated blood pressure, which damages the brain's white matter, an area that is responsible for cognition.

Taking steps today towards reigning in blood pressure can decrease the risk of memory impairment down the road.   Consider adding natural therapies to your blood pressure management toolkit like acupuncture and chiropractic care.  Studies have shown that acupuncture helps to relieve stress at specific acupoints throughout the body, relaxing the patient and helping to reduce mild to moderate hypertension.  Chiropractic is beneficial in affecting the autonomic nervous system, the part of the nervous system that directs the heart rate, helping to lower blood pressure naturally.

Call our office to incorporate these two therapies into your blood pressure management plan.   Lori Fortunato LAc, our licensed acupuncturist, is offering $25 off an initial acupuncture session for private pay patients throughout November.

November is American Diabetes Month:
Following A Low GI Diet Can Help Manage Blood Sugar Levels

For people living with diabetes, adhering to a low glycemic index (GI) diet is key to maintaining blood s ugar levels.  Unlike other diets that count calories or portion sizes, a  glycemic index diet is based on a system that ranks carbohydrates on a scale from 1 to 100 based on their effect on blood sugar; the ranking provides a relatively easy way to distinguish slow acting "good" carbs that are more slowly digested and cause a slower rise in blood sugar from fast acting "bad" carbs that cause a rapid spike in blood sugar.

According to Holistic Health Coach Kelly Hoffman, adhering to a low GI lifestyle can be relatively simple.  "I t's a matter of retraining your taste buds and your gut. Eating meals loaded with fiber, fat and protein will leave you feeling full and satisfied and eliminate cravings.  Your morning meal will dictate blood sugar fluctuations throughout the day, so try eating a breakfast filled with protein, healthy fats and fiber: 2 tablespoons avocado or coconut oil, 2 cups of spinach and kale and 1-2 eggs sautéed in a pan is a great breakfast choice."  Kelly adds, "Starting your day with 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in warm water and cinnamon (a great spice for blood sugar control) is an easy way to restore the lining in your gut and help to stabilize blood sugars."

Having a protein, healthy fat and fiber at every meal and snack will keep blood sugar levels even. Cashews, almonds and walnuts are great snack choices. Adding fennel and/or coriander to your meals is a healthy way to improve your gut health which therefore improves your blood sugars.

Addressing Diabetes' Emotional Side
By Dr. Andreas Michaelides

L iving with a chronic disease like diabetes can be challenging.  It disrupts almost all areas of life, not only of the person diagnosed but also the surrounding family.  An initial diabetes diagnosis necessitates immediate life changes and strict adherence to new routines; non-compliance has serious, life-threatening repercussions, yet oftentimes it is difficult for people to fully comprehend the consequences of dietary missteps, lack of medical adherence or haphazard self-monitoring.  Non-adherence is not always an issue of "I don't know what to do," but an "I am not motivated to do it."

Proper diabetes management requires a multidisciplinary team of experts that can help provide guidance for daily living.   A team care approach not only helps keep diabetes in check, but can provide quality of life support.  Caring for the emotional side of diabetes is as equally important as treating the obvious physiological issues and is a critical part of whole body wellness for those living with the disease.   Psychologists specializing in diabetes management can help patients develop coping skills, understand barriers around compliance and assist with accepting a new lifestyle.

A skilled psychologist on the team is especially beneficial when the patient experiences significant family problems or common comorbid conditions like depression, anxiety or stress.  The therapist can offer healthy methods to manage these issues which often impact adherence and glucose levels, and can be helpful in dealing with someone who is resistant to change, a common issue with this population.  Through counseling sessions, a psychologist can help implement positive life changes that will impact all areas of the patient's life.

Dr. Andreas Michaelides is a clinical psychologist offering individual and group therapy for weight loss, traumatic brain injuries, depression/anxiety and other life transition problems. He is also a Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) Master Trainer and  Chief of Psychology at Noom where he has helped translate the delivery of the DPP program to a virtual platform.
