When Greg Epstein, the Humanist Chaplain at Harvard and Humanist Hub executive director, was learning how to officiate weddings many years ago, a teacher once remarked, "I do" are the most powerful two words a person can say, because of their power to transform his or her identity. Maybe, but if so, what is the most powerful single word in the world? "Fire," when in a crowded theater? "Mama," to a frightened child?
The most powerful word in the world is "we." No other single word, spoken or withheld, has such broad and deep power to change our perspective and, indeed, to change our life. Who we include in our definition of "us" literally defines our identity.
Greg has been planning this talk, on this date, for months, all the while knowing it would take place 2 days before Election Day. We knew this election would be historic, and we hoped a message of community, inclusion and unity could be a balm for an intensely partisan season. But we could not have known just HOW historically divisive this election would be. With that in mind, Greg recently decided not to focus his talk on politics, but on the way our experience of "we" shapes our personal lives. Specifically, with the recent birth of his first child, Greg experienced a level of connectedness he had never before allowed himself. At this meeting, he will share what he has learned from fatherhood about the human potential to experience true togetherness. Then we will explore what our definition of "we" might mean for our own ability to connect with others, experience love, and create a world in which more people get to experience a sense of belonging, along with us.
