URBAN INNOVATION
/   URBAN INNOVATION - A MAP AND A GUIDE
#WhySJ

As part of the California iHub program, San Jose leads the San Jose/Silicon Valley Emerging Technology Innovation Hub, and w e recently conducted a review of our partners and other emerging organizations with a shared mission of helping to promote and support entrepreneurship in the city.

The number of these organizations is reaching a kind of critical mass, and OED took on the task of developing the first Urban Innovation map and guide.

Organizations on this map represent an increasingly robust network of accelerators, incubators, maker places and co-working spaces.

With more than 20 sites, from a concentration in Downtown San Jose extending to North San Jose and Edenvale, this map and guide shows the astonishing network of enterprise-boosting organizations in San Jose. More information can be found in our blogpost on the map.

SAN JOSE ECONOMY

LOOKING GOOD: SAN JOSE CONTINUES TO ADD JOBS, WORKERS
#SJfacts

The latest economic report card shows a healthy local economy, with robust job growth and a strong labor market.

San Jose's September unemployment rate is estimated at a low 4.2%, even as an additional 20,500 workers entered San Jose's labor force compared to September 2015.  This is consistent with continuing job gains seen at the regional, state and national level in recent jobs reports.

In welcome news for San Jose workers, apartment rents and housing prices appear to be leveling. Average apartment rent for the 3rd quarter of 2016 is $2,500, not cheap, by any means, but only 0.6% higher than the same quarter last year. Meanwhile, the median sales price for a single family home is $851,000, just 0.1% higher than the same month last year.

For the full report, check out the Q3 2016 San Jose economic snapshot. All the data is posted on our Economic Indicators Dashboard.

MANUFACTURING
ELECTRIC/AUTONOMOUS CAR COMPANY OPENS IN SAN JOSE
#BuiltinSanJose

Adding to San Jose's growing presence in the electric and autonomous car manufacturing market, startup NextEV celebrated its grand opening in North San Jose, with San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo and hundreds of partners, investors and media.

The two-year old company was founded by Chinese entrepreneur William Li, and plans to build a series of electric and autonomous cars for the Chinese market first and then enter global markets.

NextEV occupies an 85,000 square foot building at 3200 North First Street that will house 400 workers. The company  is one of 18 manufacturers approved to test autonomous vehicles on California roads.  Although no cars were demonstrated at the event, a Chinese website  just published some photos   of NextEV's "supercar."

/ A NEW PARK FOR BARKING IN DOWNTOWN

#DTSJ
Downtown San Jos e got its first urban dog park, thanks to the San Jose Downtown Association and neighboring property owners.

Set up almost overnight on a vacant lot at 194 Santa Clara Street between Almaden Boulevard and San Pedro Street, Hart's Dog Park was named in honor of the much-loved former downtown department store.

The 2000-square-foot park has lighting, benches, and artificial turf and tree stumps for doggy enjoyment. Until the site is developed, downtown dogs have their own place to meet and greet. The full story was covered and the opening videotaped by the Mercury News.

For more information, contact Blage Zelalich, Downtown Manager, OED.

OED EXPLORES DOWNTOWN ON BREWBIKE

#DTSJ

Members of OED's Business Development and Office of Cultural Affairs teams took an exploratory trip on San Jose's new BrewBike. We expended many more calories in pedaling the 10-seater bike-powered vehicle than we gained in our visit to Haberdasher and South 55.

BrewBike is a novel approach to work-group bonding while visiting the nightlife of San Jose's Downtown. For more information, contact Reena Brilliot, Business Development Officer, OED.
