From Mrs. Rowley  decorated_turkey.jpg

What a great turn-out we had for our Trunk of Treat! Cars were creatively decorated, and the costumes were outstanding! Congratulations to all of our winners, and thanks to all who participated. A special thanks to Mrs. Lopez for organizing the event.

Yesterday, the Feast of All Saints, our 2 nd graders really showed us their saintly side by dressing as their favorite saint and attending Mass as their saint. After Mass, they each student gave a presentation in their classroom about their saint. Because we went to Mass on Tuesday we will have a Living Rosary on Thursday, led by the middle school students.

Friday is our annual Pumpkin Fun Run. Please join us and cheer our students as they by run (or walk) laps in the field.

We are launching "Discover Catholic Schools Week" with an open house on Sunday, November 13 from 11:00am-1:00pm. Please spread the word to friends and family and invite them to stop in and visit our school.

The Fall Scholastic Book Fair is coming to the St. Ambrose School library, November 10 - November 15. It will be open to everyone Sunday, November 13, from 9:00 am to 1:30 pm. Be sure to come by before or after Mass. It's never too early to start your holiday shopping

We are currently collecting items for our Three Kings Store. This is a great tradition at St. Ambrose School and a Christmas shopping opportunity for our students. We stock the store with re-gifted items donated by the community and the students go shopping for items that are sold for $1 or $2. All proceeds go directly to the school. If you have items to donate you can drop them off at the school office.

Trunk or Treat Thank You

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who participated in our 2nd St. Ambrose Trunk or Treat event. It was a wonderful evening full of fun and community.

We saw some amazing costumes and had over 24 trunks in attendance - we have so much creativity and imagination at St. Ambrose!

With so many choices, judging 'Best Trunk' and 'Best Costumes' wasn't easy. Our judges, Mrs. Rowley (dressed as the Queen Bee), Mrs. Fernandez and Father Stefan Starzynski did a wonderful job, though!

Our winners were:
  • Best Costumes:
    • 0-4: Veronica Sloma-Williams (Pre-K 4) as super cute dinosaur
    • 5-8: Makayla Nguyen (1st Grade) as Mulan
    • 9-12: Nellie Kent (5th Grade) as a Birthday Cake
    • 12+: Stephen Payne (7th Grade) as savory bacon (yumm)
  •  Best Trunk: The Merullo Family with their pirate ship
  •  Best Ensemble: The Mad Hatter's Tea Party
We were also able to collect some canned goods for Food for Others. If you'd still like to donate, there will be a box in the school lobby until Friday, 11/4/16.

Third Annual Coat Drive!

The winter weather wear collection will begin THIS Tuesday, November 1st (All Saints Day) and end Wednesday, November 30th during Catholic Charities Week.  We accept coats, gloves, hats, scarves, and snowsuits and winter wear for all age groups.   We ask you to please donate only clean and in good condition items. We want to donate what we ourselves would be happy to receive.  We have had such wonderful donations in the past, but we want to emphasize the items need to be washed or dry cleaned (Zips is cheap!) before giving to our less fortunate neighbors.  Our new Bishop Designate, Bishop Burbidge, in his press conference stressed the importance of charity, and that is what the community of St. Ambrose does so well.  There will be boxes in the school, and some of our students will be helping collect the items from each classroom.  Thank you so much.
Three Kings Gift Shop Donations

Please consider wrapped_presents.jpgr helping us continue a great St. Ambrose School tradition-The Three Kings Gift Shop!  The Three Kings Shop tradition is a Christmas shopping opportunity for our students.  We stock the store with re-gifted items donated by our community that we sell for $1 or $2.  All proceeds go directly to the school.  The kids love it because they get to do their own shopping for their families with the help of our volunteer elves.

We are gladly accepting donations to stock our store! Please take a look through your closets, drawers, attics, and garages and see if you have items in VERY GOOD condition to donate to our shop. We could use gifts for moms, dads, children, teenagers, and grandparents.  Things like jewelry, toys, games, stuffed animals, ties, gadgets, mugs, books, religious items, knick-knacks, and any item you might want to receive or give as a gift.  No large gifts as the children must be able to carry the items home. We also need gift wrapping supplies, gift boxes, jewelry boxes, tape, and sturdy shopping bags. All donated items can be dropped off at the school office before December 13th.  We appreciate your support!  For questions please contact Maryellen DeWolfe at [email protected]

Club Updates
Updates from STEM Club

Our K-2 club kids took advantage of the beautiful fall day and had some outside STEM time learning about Newton's first law of motion. What is Newton's first law? It states that when the sum of the forces acting on an object is zero, its velocity is constant. In other words, if an object is at rest, it will stay at rest.

How does our STEM club make this relevant to K-2? Well, we make jumping bugs of course! First, we had a sampling of cartoon bugs to cut out and color. We then taped them to our film canisters to make "bugs". Now we pulled in the science of Newton's first law and discussed how yes, our bug canisters were at rest and would remain at rest unless we found an external force to make them move.

We decided on a fun chemical reaction using water and alka-seltzer tablets to act as our force. We filled our canisters with a little bit of water, and used syringes to do this, just to throw in some extra fine motor skill practice. Then we went outside, and with the help of our volunteers, placed a piece of alka-seltzer in the container, shut the lid and backed away. Boom!! Some had bugs had little jumps, others went higher than the basketball hoops! STEM is fun!!

3-8th members had a quieter afternoon in the library working on TinkerCad, which is a fun and easy 3D modeler. I saw a lot of cool things on their screens: names, a robot, a hamburger, a zombie apocalypse Army base, to name a few. This is all prep for trying our hand at a 3D solid modeler next time and 3D printing! What is   3D   parametric solid   modeling ? In the design and build world, it's where we start. It's a   3D
representation of what you are going to build, that will then be the basis for all analytical (such as finite element modeling) work, 2D drawing extraction, manufacturing and construction. It's the method used in the automotive, aerospace and shipbuilding industries, to name a few! Here are a few pictures. Click on the photos to enlarge.
