Welcome Dr. Marina Makarova!Welcome

This year we are again fortunate to have a visiting professor with us! This year we are honored to have Dr. Marina Makarova from Udmurt State University in Izhevsk, Russia.

Izhevsk is  the capital of Udmurt Republic region of Russia. Dr. Makarova is a Sociology  professor there. We are fortunate to also have her as part of SDSU's Sociology Department until the7th of February, 2017.

Dr. Makarova has a husband who is an electrical engineer. Together they have an 18-year-old son who is a first year student of the IT department at Udmurt State University.

Marina enjoys travel, exercise (yoga, swimming), old Russian movies, and walking around with family and friends. Her research interests are the sociology of education, corruption, and academic ethics. Her previous research projects (Germany, Latvia) were devoted on the role of civil society in fighting corruption. It is her first trip to USA, and I am impressed by this great country.

When asked, Dr. Makarova said she was surprised "firstly by smiling and happy people, free atmosphere. There are some similarities and differences between our cities.  My city is mostly industrial but agriculture also, is very developed in my region. We have almost the same climate. This town is smaller and calmer. I love it." She's been to the Black Hills and hopes to see more of the country before she returns home.

"I love steak! It's my favorite meal here! I feel a little bit awkward because some times I
do not understand English speaking, actually I need more practice. I hope I'll have possibility to get a new knowledge and experience here! "

Dr. Makarova thanks everyone who has welcomed her here saying, "Thanks for your support!!!".

Congratulations to Mugisha! We are proud of you!Congrats

Marion Mugisha (known best to many of us as "Mugisha") received his
PhD in Sociology from SDSU in the summer of 2015. During his time in Brookings, he taught courses in Intro to Sociology, Social Problems, Leadership & Organization, Urban Sociology, and Criminology. He and his wife, Elizabeth Nayebare, were both active in the department and we enjoyed getting to know them and their children. Elizabeth earned her Masters in Rural Sociology this past summer.

Recently Mugisha returned to his home country of Uganda where he has already been hired on as Department Head of the Sociology & Social Administration department. Mugisha tells us "Itis a large department with over 3,000 students enrolled in three degree programs (Bachelor of Arts social sciences, Bachelor of social work, and Bachelor of demography & reproductive health). We also teach students of other departments intro classes."
Mugisha

Mugisha says he is learning a lot about a leader and that it is "challenging but worth the effort".
We are delighted to hear that his department at Kyambogo University has several capable students that have expressed interest in pursuing Masters and PhD degrees here at SDSU!

This spring semester Mugisha is planning a return to Brookings to pick up his family and we look forward to visiting with him more at that time. Until then, Mugisha thanks everyone at SDSU that helped him achieve his success and sends greetings to all.

Child Protection Screening Specialist Opens Possibilities for Sociology Majors
Sociology Club of Sioux FallsSFNews

Thanks to Sociology Club member Emily Olwell, on October 5th, the University Center Sociology Club had the opportunity to hear from guest presenter Michele Whalen-Ridings, a Screening Specialist with Child Protection Services. Eight club members were able to attend and ask questions.

Michele opened up many possibilities for both internships and employment with the Department of Social Service with a focus on Child Protection Services. These are positions for which sociology majors would be uniquely qualified, and their sociology degrees would be a good fit.

Michele works with referrals when people first contact DSS about a child being abused and neglected. Michele pointed out that in 2015, there were 5,178 reports of child abuse and neglect that came into their office. Part of Michele's job is to screen these carefully, so that they are handled in the best way possible.

Michele has been working in Child Protection for 18 years, which speaks well of the working environment. She described in detail the jobs at Child Protection Services and indicated a variety of jobs that could fit sociology majors' different interests and abilities. One positive is that there is a six-week initial training for new hires.

She also passed along the State of South Dakota website for internships, as well as for employment, indicating access to a Mandatory Reporting video on the DSS website.

The Sioux Falls Sociology Club's next guest speaker will be a narcotics detective, invited by club member Mark Huntington, to speak on November 2nd at noon (conference room F-SCI 208).
