Responding to Charlottesville - from Larry Hovis, CBFNC Executive Coordinator
|
Since Saturday's horrendous events in Charlottesville, the CBF community has offered prophetic witness, Christian care, and sincere prayer for all who were affected. We join this chorus. The CBFNC community I know and love stands resolutely against hatred, bigotry, violence, and injustice. We oppose racism in any form and reject any idea of racial supremacy, especially the white supremacy that has shaped too much of our history and fueled the violence in Charlottesville. Such ideas are contrary to CBFNC's understanding of Scripture, the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and our historic Baptist principles.
I call on ministers and other church leaders to help their congregations understand more deeply the racism that divides us and diminishes the image of God in all of us. I call on our community of individuals, churches, and partners to develop concrete, practical ways to respond, not just with our words in the aftermath of a national event but with our deeds, day after day, in our cities, towns, and neighborhoods.
For almost ten years, CBFNC has sought to address these matters through our Racial Reconciliation Ministry Team. We have developed a number of good resources, which can be
found here.
I especially encourage church leaders to offer a study of CBFNC's Biblically-based racial reconciliation curriculum,
The Body of Christ, which includes a study guide and video. Download it from our website or contact our office to order hard copies.
Racism is a problem for all of us. Each of us, especially we who claim to follow the Prince of Peace, must be part of the solution. "May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with us all" (2 Corinthians
13:14). Amen.

New Bible study leadership resource
|
The Alphabet of Errors: How to Teach the Bible Better, a brand new resource written by CBFNC Church Resources Coordinator Rick Jordan, is now available! With over 30 years of teaching experience, Dr. Rick Jordan has learned what works - and what does not - in leading a Bible study.
Using the alphabet, Dr. Jordan itemizes 26 errors common to Bible study teachers, such as the first three chapters on Assumptions, Bullies, and Calling on the Introvert. With humor, humility, and wisdom, the book promises to help the beginning teacher get off to a good start and to help the good teacher become a great teacher.
