On Monday, August 21, we will experience a solar eclipse, the first in 38 years. The eclipse will begin at 9:02 a.m. and end before 12:00 pm. Our schools will have activities and will be following safety procedures. Some schools may adjust recess and outdoor activities.
While this is an exciting event, it is NOT SAFE to look at the sun with a naked eye during a partial or full eclipse. That can lead to severe corneal damage. The use of protective lenses or "indirect" viewing devices is recommended.

How to Become a Volunteer
|
If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, you will need to visit the "Be A Mentor (BAM)" website by clicking here. Here you will need to enter your personal information and select the school site(s) and/or program(s) you would like to volunteer with. Your information will then be forwarded to the selected school(s)/ program(s) (e.g., PYA, Stagg, Preschool). The BAM coordinator from the site/program will review and approve your application to volunteer. Once you are approved by the site/program, you will be referred to the Police Department for a background check, ID badge, and possible fingerprinting (depending on the volunteer position).

A Letter from the Superintendent: Welcome Back, SUSD!

Welcome to the 2017-18 school year! This year we will continue the efforts begun last year to improve student achievement, address the needs of each of our student demographic groups, and provide quality instruction and professional development opportunities for our teachers and administrators. These continued efforts will help ensure that our students are receiving the highest quality education in safe and caring learning environments. If this sounds ambitious, it is. I know how hard our schools worked last year to provide remarkable instruction and programs for students. Our success this year depends on the same concentrated efforts from leadership, teachers, staff, parents and students.
In 2016-17, we accomplished some astounding achievements. We realized significant increase in the number of English Learners meeting reclassification criteria, increases in the graduation rate at each of our high schools, and significant drops in suspensions and expulsions. This happened because of all of your work and my job is to make sure that we continue to provide the resources for continued success.

| Successful Start for SUSD Students & Staff |
 Stockton Unified schools opened Tuesday to more than 38,000 k-12 students, launching the 2018 year with energy, optimism, and plans for hard work. Principals said it was the smoothest opening many recall, with students arriving well prepared for class.
Crews worked all summer cleaning the schools, mowing the lawns and trimming trees to make the campuses as welcoming as possible. Teachers were prepared with some exciting instructional plans and programs for students. As families returned Tuesday, school staffs met them at their gates, escorting kindergartners to their first classes and directing parents and students to assigned classrooms.
The district's 41 elementary schools began holding back-to-school nights this week and principals and teachers are reminding parents how important it is to attend these events and to stay in touch with the teacher throughout the year. Click here to find out when your child's back-to-school night is scheduled.
High school back-to-school nights are planned for later in August; click here to view the schedule. Back-to-school nights introduce parents to the school's plans for the year. Principals review school performances on the California statewide tests and discuss how the school plans to address challenges. Parents have the opportunity to meet their principals and teachers. Many schools are holding book fairs in conjunction with the event.
So visit your school, meeting your administrators and talk to your child's teacher soon!

| Know Your Class Expectations |
Did you know what your kindergartner will learn this year? How many site words he or she needs to know? What they need to know about the numbers 1-10? Do they need to know the alphabet and letter sounds?
It is so important that parents know what their child is expected to learn every year in school in order to help them at home. You do not want them to get behind early in their school career because catching up later can be difficult. So talk to your teachers about the expectations for this year. Ask your child what he or she learned every day and have them read every night.
Click here to view the state standards so you know what your child is expected to master this year. Your classroom may have them posted. Teachers explained this at back-to-school nights, but you probably received a lot of information and you might want to take another look.
Remember, older students also have to master very specific standards in math, English, science and Social studies. Talk to your child's teacher. And please look at the video we have posted in English and Spanish on the top of our website to see the steps your child needs to take to become college/career ready!
The district will be sending stick up posters of the k-3 standards home with your students shortly. Be sure to monitor that your child is on task. Help your child have a successful 2017-18 school year!

A Strong Beginning for Family Engagement

On Thursday, August 10th, the SUSD Parent/ Community Empowerment Department kicked off the school year with a very well-attended Family Engagement Orientation. This event was a collaboration between Parent/Community Empowerment, SUSD Police Department and Health Services.
Ms. Kristina Aguilera, District Parent Liaison, led the workshop and provided parents with an in-depth presentation geared to enhance and increase family engagement. Every seat in the SUSD Police department's auditorium was filled with parents and guardians eager to support student achievement.
The Stockton Unified School District Police Department trained parents to navigate the new volunteer website and Health Services was on hand to provide families with free TB screenings.
We would like to thank everyone who made this event a success!

Ready for the New School Year!

For children in foster care and transitional housing, finding the resources needed to return to school and succeed academically as students can be overwhelming. This year, The Stockton Unified School District (SUSD) Police Department partnered with the Stockton Walmart Supercenter for donations of back packs, school supplies and miscellaneous essentials to support our foster youth and students in transition success in the 2017-2018 school year. SUSD police staff also personally donated funds to purchase school supplies and provide gift cards at Payless Shoe Source. All contributions were delivered on August 3, 2017 to the District's Child Welfare and Attendance Department for disbursement to children in preparation for their first day of school.
