The deadline to submit proposals for the December monthly challenge - Water Conservation - is Wednesday, November 30th. Remember, the grant is for $550! Download the guidelines for the proposal.
The Academy's Star Schools
Students from West Miami Middle School created 3D models of different habitats and learned how they are being impacted by human activities.
Students from Caribbean K-8 Center set up 3 hydroponic systems in their new science lab. These systems are efficient and minimize water waste.
Students from
Palmer Trinity School
helped to write a proposal to start composting. It was accepted by the administration and they will work with cafeteria staff to use food waste.
Student fromKey Biscayne Presbyterian School built an irrigation system for their new garden. They also purchased rainwater barrels which they will use to water their garden.
Every Drop Counts Poster Contest
MDCPS elementary school students from kindergarten through fifth grade are invited to participate in the 9th Annual Every Drop Counts Poster Contest. Using this year's theme, "It Starts With Water - Conserve It," students can express the benefits of water and energy conservation. Participants will get a free T-shirt with a chance to win other prizes! Deadline to submit is February 10, 2017. Click here for the entry form and more information.

Florida's Dept. of Environmental Protection has proposed an easing of restrictions on toxic chemicals in our surface waters, a rule-change that would have a direct impact on our health. It's now up to the Federal EPA to accept or reject the proposed change. To help influence this critical decision,

Grants of
$5,000 to $25,000 will be awarded to those communities who can demonstrate the greatest benefits for residents, employers and visitors and are able to provide a stewardship plan for our joint investment. Deadline: Dec. 16, 2016.
Any school planning a new garden program or expanding an established one that serves youth is eligible to
apply. The top five programs will receive packages valued at
$750 that include plants, tools, seeds, a $50 gift certificate for gardening supplies, and a KidsGardening curriculum package. Fifteen programs will receive a similar package valued at $500. Deadline: December 15, 2016.
