NOVEMBER 2016
innovationCommunity Foundation Seeds Innovation
2016 Grantee Nova Mini Maker Faire
We did it!

Thanks to very generous support from our community, we successfully raised $500,000 to establish an endowment for our Innovation Fund, a source of venture philanthropy that invests in innovative programs that will help diversify the local economy, give local students a leg up as they navigate their education and future careers, and support complex issues in new, creative ways.

In March, an anonymous donor challenged us with a $250,000 matching gift to build this endowment.  Our community rose to the challenge, completing the match last month, with more than 60 individual and corporate donors contributing to the campaign.  An estimated $25,000 from the interest of this endowment will be available each year beginning in 2018 to make impactful grants.

The establishment of our Innovation Fund Endowment allows us to be an active participant in shaping the region's future, with the flexibility to invest in innovative programs and organizations in Northern Virginia.

Help us Respond to Need this Holiday Season
4-year-old Yassine learned to read at The Child and Family Network Centers thanks to a 2016 Community Investment Funds grant.
Did you know that right here in Northern Virginia, 371,900 of our friends and neighbors live at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level?

Each year, our Community Investment Funds help meet the most critical needs in our community through impactful grants to local organizations.   See the 2016 grantees here.  These grants provided over $380,000 to 36 organizations and supported more than 19,000 individuals in our community requiring support.

Please consider making a year-end gift to support this annual grant cycle.  Your contribution will make a difference!

Raise the Region Gala Unprecedented Success
View photos from the event.
On October 7, 2016, we joined with 640 friends and community leaders at the McLean Hilton for our annual "Raise the Region" black tie Gala.  We celebrated the catalytic accomplishments of our donor community and honored J. Knox Singleton, CEO of Inova, with the 2016 Community Leadership Award, the most prestigious, longest standing award of its kind in our region.

Our community raised more than $550,000 to support our work in the region.  Hundreds of people contribute to the success of our annual Gala. It is a massive undertaking, made possible only through the heartfelt dedication and hard work of an army of volunteers, donors, staff members, board members, cheerleaders, and Community Foundation friends. The commitment of so many to our mission moves us to action each year and infinitely inspires us.

John and Jinnie Chapel were the Presenting Sponsors.

Giving Circle of HOPE hits Million Dollar Milestone
Founders of the Giving Circle of HOPE
The Giving Circle of HOPE (GCH) is celebrating a major milestone this year - more than $1 million raised and granted to support critical needs in Northern Virginia.  Its members voted for the 2016 grantees at a special event to celebrate the momentous occasion on Thursday, November 17th.

"This milestone proves the power of collective giving because we reached it with many individuals giving as little as one dollar a day or volunteering for one event a year," said founding member Linda Strup.  "Reaching this $1M milestone is exciting, but I am even prouder of the lives we have changed, both within the Giving Circle of HOPE and in the greater community."

The Giving Circle of HOPE creates positive change in Northern Virginia through engaged and collective philanthropy.

Loudoun Impact Fund Awards $96,725
2016 Loudoun Impact Fund Members and Grantees
The Loudoun Impact Fund, a joint initiative of the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia and the Community Foundation for Loudoun and Northern Fauquier Counties, announced the grantees of its fourth annual grant cycle last month.  Ten charities dedicated to programs benefitting youth and elderly in Loudoun County received grants ranging from $5,000 to $15,000, for a total of $96,725 in 2016, the largest pool of funding distributed to date.

As put by John Wolff, an annual member of the Giving Circle and one of its charter members, "the Loudoun Impact Fund is an extraordinary collaboration that benefits our community in the most meaningful ways.  As we build local philanthropy, we build community."

Patricia Funegra - Supporter of Local Needs
Read Patricia Funegra's full blog post.
Patricia Funegra is a member of the  Future Fund, the giving circle for young professionals at the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia, and the Founder and CEO of  La Cocina VA, a grant recipient of the Community Investment Funds grant cycle.  We asked her a few questions about her personal philanthropy and commitment to supporting the local community.

What does it mean to you to support local critical needs?

I was born and raised in Peru until I decided to move to the United States when I was 38 years old. Coming from a developing country helps me understand with more clarity how it is to live lives where not even the most basic needs are met. I always strive to see a more just and equitable world and I decided to start working towards that goal in our own back yard, Northern Virginia.

Our low-income communities face a wide variety of challenge; lack of access to affordable housing, healthy food, access to education and opportunities among other issues, but I strongly believe that when a community works together combining its resources to provide and facilitate access to those critical needs, our community thrives.

Advertising Opportunities in GOOD BUSINESS
The Community Foundation is now creating the 5th edition of GOOD BUSINESS, our publication that shines a spotlight on companies that give back in a variety of ways to our community.

Companies engage in corporate philanthropy for a variety of reasons. But for the companies featured in GOOD BUSINESS magazine, it comes as no surprise that a positive correlation exists between a company's socially responsible investments and its ultimate economic success. They know, as we do, that it's just "good business" to give back.

There are opportunities to advertise your business in this publication, to be mailed to 1,500 local business leaders and available through the Community Foundation's website to 35,000 annual visitors.

Regional Giving Circle Connector
Our region is home to dozens of giving circles that benefit from connecting to and learning from one another about a variety of issues important to giving circles.

On October 27, 2016, the Association of Baltimore Area Grantmakers brought together 40 giving circle leaders representing 10 giving circles of various ages and sizes from four states to Annapolis for their eighth Annual Giving Circle Connector Gathering.    The Gathering provided the opportunity to network, share resources, and discuss best practices on how to sustain, nurture, and grow giving circles.

The sessions featured the theme: "Let's Give them Something to Talk About: Communicating with and about your Circle".  The Gathering provided the opportunity to network, and conversation about resources and best practices on how to sustain, nurture and grow giving circles.

Community Foundation staff and giving circle members representing the Future Fund and Business Women's Giving Circle attended this meeting.  Stay tuned for a Northern Virginia giving circle gathering in the near future!
