Yoshinori Ohsumi of Japan Wins Nobel Prize for Study of 'Self-Eating' Cells Yoshinori Ohsumi, a Japanese cell biologist, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine on Monday for his discoveries on how cells recycle their content, a process known as autophagy, a Greek term for "self-eating." Scientists Watch an Immune System Fight The Flu in Real Time By using multiphoton microscopy in tandem with a laser and fluorescence, the team monitored influenza virus in a mouse's trachea (where the transluency made imaging possible) through the infection and immune system response. As a job seeker, if you create an account, you will be sent a Job Flash email, which lists the most recent available job postings. The Job Flash is usually sent out on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month. You can also search the jobs database (currently 160 jobs available) and use the Job Alert function to let you know when certain types of jobs are available You can also post your résumé /CV so that employers can search for you.

As an Employer you can create account and for a fee (reduced fees for our Sustaining Members) post a job and search for the résumé /CV of potential candidates. It's all just a click away at http://jobs.microscopy.org/.

Support your local affiliated society!  Invite students & early career scientists & technologists to your LAS meetings.  Better yet, bring a new member to your local meeting and get them involved! 
 
If your LAS is planning a meeting, please let me know at least 2 months in advance so I can announce it in an upcoming issue of the MSA Update.

Nominations for LAS Director:  My term as LAS Director runs until December 2017.   Elections for my successor will be held at the LAS Breakfast next summer at M&M2017.  Nominations are now being accepted; you may self-nominate if you are interested.  Contact me if you have any questions.

Did you know that there are 11 FIGs that promote a specific discipline to microscopy? Click here  to check them out and contact the leader to get more information. If you are interested in joining one or more of them, please complete the membership form. You can also join a FIG when renewing your MSA membership; students may join one FIG at no cost.

FIG Leaders, please submit your activity request forms for 2018 activities to Andy Vogt by the end of October. Also, an election ballot will go out by email on October 15 for FIG Committee Co-Chair. If you are interested please contact Andy Vogt.
