Some members have asked why we are not seeing more corn in this year's share. Area wide this has been a poor start to sweet corn season. Corn likes warm soils to start germinating and then it likes warm sunny weather to grow. Typically the corn harvested in late July and August would have been seeded from mid-April through mid-June. The first part of the growing season this year (May-July) was cool, moist and cloudy. This is far from ideal corn growing weather. As a result, the first corn this year has been late, small and few.
Moving forward the corn harvest looks better, but still not as plentiful as past years. Yet, some of those cooler loving crops such as broccoli have been loving this cooler than normal summer. Typically we grow little summer broccoli as it does not respond well to the high temperatures of the summer. Yet we have been harvesting delicious broccoli all of August (this might be a record broccoli summer for us)!
