Vine Hill Elementary School November 1, 2016

Dear Vine Hill Families,

October has come and gone so quickly. Halloween festivities were so enjoyable. Thank you to all of you who came out to help in classrooms and be a part of the parade. The community spirit at Vine Hill School is so special.

I have been thinking about the topic of Social Media and wanted to share a few things with you. I will be attending the viewing of Screenagers at Scotts Valley Middle School tomorrow and will share out any insights I may have. We certainly are in a new era with so many adults and children having access to the internet. We closely supervise our students when they are online at school and we do have a filter, managed by the Santa Cruz County Office of Education that blocks inappropriate content.  However, students who have smart phones and use them after school have access to unmonitored content. Parents-please monitor your children's internet activity at home. Additionally, please make sure your social media posts are appropriate. If you have concerns about a school issue, please voice your concerns directly to your child's teacher or to the school office.

I also wanted to share with you the Vine Hill School norms for staff response time to email.  The Leadership Team and I have discussed this in detail. It is our hope to read all email within 24 hours and to respond within 48 to 72 hours. Many of the teachers on staff are also parents and need to be available to their families in the evening and on the weekends. It is important for all of us to respect time and boundaries.

Parent Teacher Conferences take place November 14th to 18th and we will have a minimum day schedule.  Conferences are a special time for you and your child's teacher as this is an excellent opportunity to review your child's progress and celebrate accomplishments. Please look for your conference time in the Friday Folder this week. We make every effort to match up siblings back to back on the schedule.

Sincerely,
Julie Ebert / Principal

The 4th Annual Vine Hill School Read-A-Thon
The 4th Annual Read-A-Thon is October 31 - November 10, 2016! Our teachers and children will be READING and helping Vine Hill School at the same time! ALL reading takes place IN CLASS and students get sponsors from their friends and family. In addition, each class has it's own Adopt-A-Class sponsor and will also have a community reader visit to read a book!

Community Readers Program
As part of our Read-A-Thon, our readers include community readers in each classroom.  This year we have police officers, fire fighters, artists, musicians, engineers, scientists, local politicians and more. These community readers will help our Vine Hill students to understand the relevance and importance of reading in different careers.

Adopt-A-Class Program
Own a business?  Or know someone that does?  Your business can sponsor our young readers at $1.25 per session for 10 sessions for an average class of 28 for a total of $350.  You will be assigned a particular class and be invited to meet the class if desired.

Your benefits include:
Thanks on the Auction Facebook page, and the Bear Society Parent Group
Logo placement on one flyer thanking all sponsors
Logo placement and thanks in an all-school email blast
Invitation to meet and greet with sponsored class
